Vice
Chancellor's Message
For 144 years, the acronym
“GC” has commanded veneration not only in Lahore – the cultural
heartland of South Asia – but throughout the Subcontinent. The
fact that the clock tower at GC University Lahore towers above
other such edifices in the country, is more of a metaphorical
truth than a literal fact. My pupils here at GCU, and the old
boys and girls of the institution, think of the clock
tower as a beacon of enlightenment. When they see the tower,
they transcend its physical dimensions and muse on the
intellectual heights that successive generations of Ravians
add to the structure. With classes starting from three
donated rooms in Dhyan Singh’s historic Haveli in the
Walled City, Government College Lahore went on to garner
prestige and pre-eminence, becoming Pakistan’s most sought after
educational institution. It has been a long journey from Dhyan
Singh’s Haveli to the elevated gothic marvel in the heart
of Lahore, one that saw Government College Lahore burgeon into a
university in 2002.
The fair name of the
University has been associated with ideologues and poets like
Dr. Muhammad Iqbal and Faiz Ahmad Faiz, scientists like Nobel
Laureates Dr. Abdus Salam, Dr. Har Gobind Khurana, and Dr.
Sultan Ahmad, teachers and litterateurs of such rare vintage as
Maulana Muhammad Hussain Azad, Prof. Ahmad Shah (Patras) Bokhari,
Soofi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum, Dr. Imdad Hussain and Dr.
Muhammad Ajmal. In its majestic corridors have walked men and
women who went on to become leading scientists, economists,
bureaucrats, politicians and professionals in whatever fields
they chose.
It is thus a matter of
pleasure for me to congratulate new Ravians in anticipation of
their admission to GC University Lahore. For students seeking an
educational institution not only to discipline their
sensibility, but also to refine their vision and graduate into
maturity, GC University Lahore is the only desirable choice in
the country. GC University Lahore eclipses comparable
institutions in imparting instructions of the highest order at
all levels of education, and in offering its students
opportunities for overall development in a disciplined and
peaceful atmosphere.
GC University Lahore has
attained a distinguished place among Pakistani Universities due
to its strong commitment to teaching and research pursuits. At
the Undergraduate level, the University offers BA/BSc 4-Year (Hons.)
Degree Programme in 20 disciplines of Science & Technology, Arts
and Social & Sciences and Languages, BS in Computer Science and
BSc Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications. At the
Postgraduate level, the University offers MPhil/MS and PhD
Degrees in 27 disciplines of Science & Technology, Arts & Social
Sciences and Languages in a highly research-conducive
environment.
Any introduction to GCU is
incomplete without mention of what we call the Ravian Spirit.
This Spirit can be encapsulated in the word “quest” –
a passionate spirit of inquiry and the ability to doubt,
question and endeavour. Finding the answer is not always
important; the mettle to place question marks against truisms
and the lifelong search for new horizons is what we take the
Spirit to stand for. This is what we have inscribed on the
entrance ways to the University – GCU does not have a display
signboard – in its place is this institution’s eternal motto:
Courage to Know.
Prof. Khalid Aftab

B.A/B.Sc. 4-Year (Hons) Degree
Programme
Introducing the
4-Year (Hons.) Degree Programme is a major challenge for
higher educational institutions in Pakistan. It is a
well-known fact that the old 2-Year Bachelor’s Degree
clearly lagged behind, both qualitatively and quantitatively
in the international academic world, and the job market,
where 16 years of education leading to Graduation is
required. The discrepancy between the two educational
practices became even more pronounced due to globalising
trends in higher education, set in motion during the last
two decades. In order to produce graduates with quality
education at par with international standards, the
Government has decided in principle to introduce the 4-Year
BA/BSc (Hons.) Degree Programme at all public universities
in Pakistan. A perception that has emerged in the academia
and the administration is that initially, only universities
well-equipped with educational resources and requisite
infrastructure, should accept the challenge of introducing
the new Graduation Programme.
GC University
Lahore being one such institution, has not only accepted
this challenge, but has also envisaged it as an opportunity
to realise its vision of higher education in its
disciplinary and interdisciplinary dimensions. After
laborious efforts by a team of educationists and curriculum
experts at GCU, a detailed scheme of study for BA/BSc (Hons.)
Degree Programme was designed and introduced in 2005.
The BA/BSc
4-Year (Hons.) Degree Programme should not be interpreted as
merely an increase in the duration of the BA/BSc Programme
from two to four years or, as simply a change in the name of
the Master's Degree to Bachelor's Degree. It is an
integrated new Programme of higher education with a
carefully planned curriculum, based on the most modern
concepts of higher learning.
In accordance
with the latest educational practices and theories of
curriculum development, the 4-Year BA/BSc (Hons.) Degree
Programme has been designed to provide freshmen with
wide-ranging learning opportunities.
The practice of early narrow
specialisation has been avoided and open disciplinary spaces
have been created through a variety of subject combinations. The
combinations of subjects offered in the beginning of the 4-Year
Graduation Programme, fulfil the academic and intellectual needs
of students with diverse aptitudes and varied plans for future
professions.
GC University Lahore has been
a pioneer in the promotion of interdisciplinary learning in its
Programmes of higher education. The same spirit and outlook has
not only been preserved in the new Programme, but has also been
strengthened through the introduction of a higher order of
interdisciplinary learning. This will equip young scholars with
the conceptual basis and theoretical paradigms underlying their
respective areas of disciplinary specialisation. The GCU
Administration is confident that this innovative strategy of
scholarship will gradually bring about a transformation in the
outlook of our students, and will go a long way in triggering
creative processes essential for the production of scientific
knowledge and the creation of artistic and literary works.
Through the
introduction of the first and second major areas of
specialisation in the second year of the Programme, and the
continuation of the second major till the third year, a unique
curricular feature has been introduced which will widen the
scope of disciplinary specialisation of the students. The study
of a secondary area of specialisation, in addition to the more
rigorous primary specialisation, will enhance the graduates'
acceptability in the job market.
