62 foreign speakers attend GCU conference
GC University Lahore
Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that
difficulties and threats had failed to deter their
determination of holding biggest international conference in
the country. “I feel pleasure and pride in announcing that
the 6th international conference on 21st century
mathematics, organized by the GCU Abdus Salam School of
Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), has broken all records of
foreign speakers and research papers and attained the
stature of the biggest international academic convention of
21st century so far in Pakistan,” said Prof Rahman while
talking to groups of 62 eminent mathematicians from 27
countries who have come all the way to Pakistan despite the
terrorism and all negative propaganda by the international
media. ASSMS Director General Dr A. D. Raza Chaudhry and
Pierre Cartier, the chairman of conference’s scientific
committee, also graced the interaction with their presence.
“As many as 62 speakers
from 27 countries including USA, Canada, Switzerland, Saudi
Arabia, Turkey and India –I must say we have set new
standards for international conference in Pakistan,” said
the Prof Rahman, claiming it was the repute and excellence
of GCU ASSMS and efforts of my entire team which had brought
these eminent scholars to Pakistan despite all the threats.
The Vice Chancellor said
it was a milestone that eminent mathematicians like Michel
Waldschmidt, Aline Bonami and Renaud Leplaideur from France,
Ragni Piene (Norway), Andreas Griewank (Germany), Hironori
Shiga (Japan), Olav Arnfinn Laudal (Norway), Constantin P.
Niculescu (Romania), Oleg Reynov, (Russia), Peter Schenzel
(Germany), Juergen Herzog (Germany), Ioan Tomescu (Romania),
and Paul Vaderlind from Sweden were in Pakistan to transfer
their knowledge to our students.

He also quoted European
Mathematical Society members saying “the GCU Abdus Salam
School has indeed put Mathematics on the map of Pakistan and
the Pakistani Mathematics on the map of the world.”
Dr A. D. Raza Chaudhry,
the chief convener of conference, termed the conference an
opportunity for young Pakistani scholars to interact with
well-known mathematicians from abroad and learn from their
knowledge and experiences. “During first two days of
conference, the GCU ASSMS students have extensively
interacted with foreign guests and formulated several joint
research projects,” he said.
He also laid a stress on
promoting research culture in the other universities of
Pakistan, saying “it makes teaching-learning more effective.
It contributes in developing the culture of reading and
writing, publication, paper presentation, using libraries
and participating in workshops, conferences and seminars”.
Speaking on the occasion, French mathematician Aline Bonami
predicted that Mathematical Sciences had bright future in
Pakistan. She said that European Mathematical Society had
pledged to provide funds to GCU ASSMS for research, since
teaching without any research was not at all desirable, even
at graduate level. She said that she had now herself
witnessed the excellence of Abdus Salam School of
Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS). She believed that Pakistani
students are very bright, intelligent, enthusiastic and
hardworking. Later, researchers presented 50 papers at the
five technical sessions on the third day of the conference.

day of 6th international conference on 21st century
mathematics organized by the GC University Lahore Abdus
Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (GCU ASSMS).
Dr A D Raza Chaudhry, an
eminent mathematician and Director General of GCU ASSMS,
said that Pierre Cartier and Michal Waldschmidt from France,
Kazim Ilhan Ikeda from Turkey, Olav Arnfinn Laudal from
Norway, Hironori Shiga from Japan, Tudor Zamirescu from
Germany, Barbu Berceanu from Romania, Martin Baca from
Slovakia, Josip Pecaric from Croatia and Valeriu Gutu from
Republic of Moldova, presented their research papers on

INT’L CONFERENCE ON 21ST CENTURY MATHEMATICS BEGINS AT GCU
The 6th international
conference on 21st century mathematics began at GC
University Lahore Abdus Salam School of Mathematical
Sciences (GCU ASSMS) under auspices of European Mathematical
Society, International Mathematical Union, Higher Education
Commission Pakistan, UNESCO, National Centre for Mathematics
and International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy.
About 500 eminent mathematicians from 27 countries of the
World including Canada, India Italy, France, USA, Turkey,
Sweden, Japan, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Romania, Bulgaria,
Nepal and Netherlands are participating in the four day
conference spread over 21 technical sessions on Analysis,
Geometry and Algebra, Discrete Mathematics and Applied
Mathematics. American Mathematical Society fellow Pierre
Cartier was the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the
conference which was chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr
Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman.
Addressing the ceremony,
Vice Chancellor Prof Rahman said Mathematics was the
language of all natural sciences and Mathematical theories
underpinned many of the most brilliant discoveries in
Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Economics, etc. He
believed that future of mathematics was bright in Pakistan
due the presence doctoral school like Abdus Salam School of
Mathematical Sciences. He said that GCU ASSMS had played a
very vital role in development of mathematical sciences in
the country and emerged as a regional centre of excellence.

Talking about the
objective of the conference, GCU ASSMS Director General Dr A
D Raza Choudhry said the conference was aimed at
fertilization of new ideas through sharing of knowledge and
interaction. He said that about 140 of 250 submitted papers
were selected for presentation in the conference. “It is not
just a conference, rather it’s a platform for the
mathematicians from all over the world to exchange ideas
about mathematics, education and research and such an
interaction can lead to fruitful long term collaborations
which would be beneficial for the development of mathematics
in Pakistan,” the ASSMS Director General said.
Speaking on the occasion,
Pierre Cartier said that the volume of mathematical
knowledge was too big to be mastered by a single individual,
so preserving, transmitting and using that knowledge had
appeared to be biggest challenge of the 21st century. He
laid a stress on a drastic revision of production of
journals and books, with unexpected means of storage and
control. He also underlined a need of establishing
interdisciplinary links, for instance, he said,
collaboration between Mathematics and Physics had done
miracles in the 21st century.
Later, O.I Reniov from Russia, Rein Zienstra
from Netherlands, G.E Karadzhov, from Netherlands, D. Panthi
from Nepal and Asfand Fahad from Pakistan presented their
research papers in first technical session of the conference
which was chaired by eminent French mathematician Constantin
Niculescu.

GCU STUDENTS
PLANTS 2000 SAPLINGS
The
students and faculty members of GCU Lahore Botany Department
planted 2000 saplings both at the main building of GCU and
Kala Shah Kaku Campus as a part of tree plantation campaign
initiated by the Punjab Forestry Department across the
province. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. (Meritorious) Dr.
Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman; Izaz-i-Kamal and Punjab Director
General Protocol Asjad Ghani Tahir inaugurated the
plantation campaign by planting a sapling at GCU Bukhari
Lawns.

be seen in the picture.
Addressing the students on current situation of
environmental deterioration, the Vice Chancellor said that
the massive falling of tress in the past decades had
endangered the biodiversity of the Country. He said that now
mass plantation of tress is the best way to reduce pollution
from the environment. He suggested that such trees are
needed to be planted which can absorb pollution from the
environment. He called on the GCU Botany Department students
to ensure the conservation of saplings which they are
planting during the one-day drive.
