GCU’s
ASSMS PRODUCES TWO MORE PHDS IN MATHEMATICS

Two more students of the Government College University's
Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences qualified as PhD
scholars. With the new addition of Kashif Ali and Muhammad
Husain the number of PhDs produced this year reached seven
as five students of the school had already been qualified
for the same degree. They two students have been working
under the supervision of Prof Dr Edy Tri Baskoro. The two
theses were evaluated by foreign mathematical scientists Dr
Mirka Miller and Prof Dr Joe Ryan from Australia and Prof
Antoni Nuntaner-Batle of Spain.

GCU STUDENTS EARN PHDS IN MATHEMATICS

Five students of the GCU Abdus Salam School of Mathematical
Sciences (ASSMS) were declared successful as PhD scholars in
mathematical science after evaluation of their theses by
world’s mathematician. Those who qualified as doctors are
Muhammad Arshad, Imran Siddique, Saifullah, Sarfraz Ahmad
and Imran Anwar. They completed their PhDs in about three
years and a half, which included vast coursework spanning
over 60 credits.
Prof. Dr. Alexander Suhanov of
Russia,
Prof. Dr. Wlodzimert of Poland, Prof Dr Alexander Fradkov of
Russia, Prof. Dr. Jurgen Kurths, Prof. Dr. Bend Martin and
Prof. Dr. Marko Roczen of Germany evaluated the theses. They
were especially invited from their respective countries for
the purpose. Director General ASSMS said 20 more PhD students
of the school would be completing their coursework this year
and mathematicians of international repute would evaluate
their theses.

GCU’s ASSMS KANGAROO MATHEMATICS CONTEST 2008 ON MARCH 20

The fourth international Kangaroo mathematics
contest will be held on March 20 for students of grades
III to XII studying in Pakistan. The last date for
registration of schools interested in enrolling their students
for the contest has been fixed at February 23, 2008. This will
be the fourth year of the country's participation in the
world's largest mathematical event to be held by the GCU's
School of Mathematical Sciences, now named after Pakistan's
first Nobel laureate, the late Dr. Abdus Salam.
All the students of FA/FSC (Part I & II)
and BA/BSC/BS(CS)/BSc (Engg.) Part I only are eligible
to participate in this contest. The participation fee is Rs.
300/- per student. Interested eligible student are directed to

Third Int’l Kangroo Mathematics contest 2007 awards ceremony
held at GCU. 33,000 students participated in competition

Punjab Governor Lt. Gen (R) Khalid Maqbool said that
government has chalked out a series of measures to boost the
quality education in the discipline of mathematics in the
country in co-operation with the services rendered by the GC
University, Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS).
The Governor was speaking at the prize distribution ceremony
of the third international kangaroo mathematical contest 2007
at the Bukhari Auditorium of the varsity. In the ceremony 32
gold medals and 168 silver medals were awarded to the
students.
Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab Vice Chancellor GCU Lahore, deans of
faculties, academic and administrative heads of GCU, ASSMS
faculty, teachers of mathematics, parents and students
participated in the ceremony. Later Governor Punjab awarded
medals to the students.
The Punjab Governor said mathematics owes greater importance
in the realm of technological advancements and has its
application in various fields i.e. science, technology,
computer or medical fields. He said that there was a time when
Muslims enjoyed authority in various fields and the cities
like Cairo and Baghdad had the distinction of attracting
people from different parts of the world who visit there to
quench their academic thrust. The Governor highly praised the
GCU ASSMS for its extending quality education in Mathematics
to the students. He informed the participants that the
government has provided Rs. 80 million for the renovation of
ASSMS building. He also applauded the foreign faculty working
at the school and hoped that this school would help in
producing more Nobel Laureates for the country in future as
well. He also appreciated the students and parents who came
from far flung areas of the country to participate in the
prize awarding ceremony of IKMC.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. A.D. Raza Chouhdry
Director General of ASSMS informed about the recent
achievements and goals attained by the school in the subject
of mathematics. He said that in the International Kangroo
Mathematics Contest 2007, 33 thousand students from the 788
schools of the country participated and their number is
doubled as compared to the last year participants of the
contest. Dr. Raza said that ASSMS and National Centre for
Mathematics is extending quality education in mathematics in
the country from the primary to Ph.D and post doctoral
fellowships. He thanked Dr. Barbu Berceanu for his dedication
to coaching the national team of Pakistan which participated
in the International Mathematical Olympiad 2007. He also
thanked Dr. Ioan Tomescu who supervised the first three
students of the ASSMS during the completion of their Ph.D
studies.

time.

Australia and Professor
Dr. Martin Baca
from Slovak Republic, Professor Dr. Joe Ryan from
Australia and Professor
Dr. Dragos-Radu
Popescu from Romania and Professor Dr. rer. nat. Klaus
Dohmen from Germany Dr. An Chang from China respectively.
The instant three Ph.D theses defended today at the ASSMS,
GCU Lahore completed in a record time of less than three and
half years. It also includes course work of 60 credits. It
is pertinent to mention that each of these Ph.D students has
several papers accepted for publications accepted by
ISI of Thomson.

Pakistan wins medal in mathematics Director SMS GC University

Pakistan
has won for the first time an international award in
mathematics at a contest held at Hanoi Vietnam from July 19 to
30.
Pakistan
has participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad
(IMO). After a tough contest participated by maths students
from large number of countries, a six-member national team of
Pakistan won the bronze medal and an award of honour.
Team
leader Dr. A. D. Raza Chaudhry, who is director general of
GCU’s School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) said that the
victory had proved that Pakistani students could also win
silver and gold medals in less than six years, but they needed
expert coaching in mathematics.
“Credit for the success must
be given to foreign coach Dr. Barbu Barceanu engaged by the
SMS. He said that Higher Education Commission had engaged top
maths scientists and experts under its foreign faculty hiring
programme to teach the PhD students at the SMS and coach young
students for international mathematical
contest.” He further added.

Paris-Sud University, Orsay offer joint PhD Programme to GCU

Paris-Sud University France has offered a joint PhD
programme in Mathematics with
School of Mathematics GC University, Lahore. Director
General SMS said that the offer from Orsay is honour for
Pakistan and a clear sign of international recognition. He
further said that
ICTP, Trieste had also invited the SMS to be
the part of the federation. The SMS had also received the same
offer from the University of Stockholm, Sweden.

SMS MATHEMATICS MOOT CONCLUDES WITH SMS TO BE RENAMED

The 3rd International Conference on 21st
Century Mathematics concluded. During this conference about
120 papers were presented and discussed.
Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Khalid Maqbool, Governor Punjab and
Chancellor GC University Lahore in his presidential address
said that “we live in the age of knowledge economy and
mathematics is the mother of all scientific disciplines”. He
further said that the experts in this field should undertake
research to explore new grounds in banking and engineering
sectors amongst others. He appreciated that the government
had undertaken several reforms in higher education sector to
improve the situation on campuses. He said the fact that 38
foreign faculty members were associated with SMS was clear
proof of the success of such efforts. He also said that nine
new engineering universities, being established with foreign
collaboration across the country, foreign Ph.D scholarships
and other initiatives would soon bring about a revolution in
this sector. He also appreciated Dr. Khalid Aftab Vice
Chancellor GC University Vice Chancellor GC University and
Dr. A.D. Raza DG SMS for continuing the largest Ph.D
programme with 64 Ph.D scholars at SMS. He also announced
that the school would be named after Nobel laureate Prof.
Abdus Salam.
Prof. Dr.
Khalid Aftab Vice Chancellor GC University said that the
secret of SMS success lies in the hard work, commitment and
dedication of its staff and its leader Dr. A. D. Raza
Choudhary as it is not the system that develops great men,
rather men develop great institutions.
Later the Governor gave away the prizes. The first prize
was shared by three students Sarfraz Ahmad, Ahmad Mahmood
Qureshi and Ms. Shaheen Nazir, second prize to Nadeem Butt,
Imran Javed and Azim Haider, third prize to Nasir Rehman and
asim Nasim and special prize to Imran Anwar and Sardar
Mohibullah Khan. Mathematical Scientist Prof. Dr. C. G.
Gibson of the University of Liverpool, UK won the special
prize for presenting the best paper at the conference.

GCU’S SMS 3RD INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICS MOOT
BEGINS

The
3rd International Conference on 21st Century Mathematics
2007 held at the School of Mathematical Sciences of GC
University Lahore. Dr Muhammad Akram Sheikh, Minister of
State and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission of Pakistan
presided over the inaugural ceremony. While speaking on this
occasion he said, “The present government is endeavoring to
promote knowledge economy as it was neglected in the past.
It is the knowledge that distinguishes human beings from the
rest of the creatures. The main objective of our government
is to eliminate poverty not to eliminate the poor,” Sheikh
maintained.
The
minister appreciated the GCU for successfully adding men of
foresight in all disciplines of life,” Besides Dr Abdus Salam
and Dr Hargobind Khorana, Chander Shakher, also a Nobel Prize
winner has been associated with GCU. It is really a matter of
great honour for institutions like GCU for having galaxy of
intellectual luminaries. Lal Muhammad Chawala, a renowned
mathematician in the USA has been staff member of GCU,” he
said. He also said mathematics was the foundation of all
disciplines and with the promotion of mathematical science,
all the disciplines of science would be developed and
ultimately nation will have rich knowledge economy and its
fruit will be delivered to the whole society at large.
While
speaking on this occasion Dr Khalid Aftab, Vice-chancellor GCU
Lahore said that Government College had been a great
institution and it had the honour of producing two Nobel
laureates, Dr Abdus Salam and Dr Hargobind Khorana. The chief
guest pointed that the college had also produced a third Nobel
laureate, Dr Chander Shekhar.
He also
said that this shows the high standard of education of the
institution, which had won recognition all over the world.
He added
that the GCU had set up its School of Mathematical Sciences to
develop the education in mathematics to higher levels and it
had proved a great success during three years of its
existence. It had engaged mathematicians of world repute from
different countries of the world. It had already held two
international conferences of world top mathematicians. Dr.
Khalid Aftab also said that more than 20 world famous
mathematicians from different countries were extending their
excellent services from morning till midnight, offering the
largest PhD and post doctorate programme in the South Asian at
the GCU. He also appreciated Dr A D Raza Choudhry, Director
General School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) and his
administrative and managerial qualities for gathering 60
mathematicians from more than 36 countries.
It is
also worth mentioning that 250 abstracts from all over the
world were received and out of them, 144 abstracts were
accepted to be presented in the conference. World-renowned
mathematician Prof C. G. Gibson conducted the inaugural
proceedings of the conference.
The
inaugural session was followed by academic program based on
presentation of papers by Ar Laptev (London), Juergen Herzog
(germany), Mircea Becheanu, Florian Luca, Igor Shparlinksi
(Romania), Iftikhar Ali (Pakistan), Tao Tang (Hong Kong),
Raja Mohammad Latif ( Saudia Arabia), Sheng Bau (China),
Shakeel Farooq Butt, S. M. Husnine, Muhammad Aurengzeb,
Sharjeel Ahmed Qureshi (LUMS), B. K. Das (India), Alvin J.
Moore (Thailand), Kashif Ali, Faqir Muhammad Bhatti
(Pakistan), Tiberiu Dumitrescu (Romania), Afroze Naqvi
