Above 200 research papers are scheduled to be presented at the five-day conference spread over 22 scientific sessions besides meetings and talks. Delegates from 40 countries including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Norway, Nepal, China, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Turkey, USA and Vietnam also attended the opening of the biggest ever international conference in Pakistan.

Participants with EMS President, Vice Chancellor GCU and DG ASSMS

Addressing the opening ceremony of the conference, European Mathematical Society President Prof. Dr. Marta Sanz-Solé congratulated the GCU Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences on organizing the fifth edition of a series of successful congresses, the World Conference on 21st Century Mathematics, under the auspices of the National Centre for Mathematics, the Higher Education Commission Pakistan, the European Mathematical Society, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Italy, the International Mathematical Union and UNESCO. She said that the Mission of such conference is to provide the Nation of Pakistan with the scientific base, innovation and workforce it needs to compete with the world in 21st century for a prosperous future. She said that Mathematics is the language of all natural sciences. Historically, she said, mathematics has played, and continues to play, a crucial role in the scientific, technological and cultural development of humanity. Mathematical theories underpin many of the most brilliant discoveries in physics, chemistry, life sciences, economics, etc. Mathematics is one of the fundamental sciences which drives most of the advances in applied science and in technology. It is also a crucial ingredient in industrial innovation. In these ways, mathematics brings economic wealth and development to society. Prof. Marta said that GCU ASSMS and some other top-class research centers outside Europe have been declared the Emerging Regional Centres of Excellence by EMS. She that the EMS strongly believes that the expertise and extensive connections of the large and diverse network it is representing, can be successfully used to reinforce these Emerging Regional Centres of Excellence in countries outside Europe. The idea is for the EMS to select, endorse and help a number of such centers to offer training to M Sc level to students in their region. Subsequently, the EMS would provide help to those who might wish to and who are capable of continuing their studies, either in their countries of origin or (partially or totally) in European research institutions. The EMS can also facilitate and collaborate in the organization of lectures and courses at the Emerging Centres of Excellence, given by leading researchers, and provide grants for members of the centres to attend conferences abroad.  We see several advantages of this project, among others.

Addressing the conference, GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab said that the conference would provide a platform to the mathematicians from all over the world to exchange ideas about mathematics, education and research and such an interaction can lead to fruitful long term collaborations which would be beneficial for the development of mathematics in Pakistan. He also termed the conference an opportunity for young Pakistani scholars to interact with well known mathematicians from abroad and learn from their knowledge and experiences. Prof. Aftab laid a stress on promoting research culture in the country’s universities, saying that it makes teaching-learning more effective. “It contributes in developing the culture of reading and writing, publication, paper presentation, using libraries and participating in workshops, conferences and seminars,” he added.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr. A. D. Raza Ch Director General GCU ASSMS credited the success of holding such huge gathering to the scientific committee of the conference chaired by Prof. Gert-Martin Greuel, the Director of the world-famous German Mathematics Research Centre, Oberwolfach. He told the conference that in years 2009-2010, the School students and faculties published more than 270 research papers in core areas of mathematics in good international journals and out of these 148 papers are also published by the PhD students. “The activities at ASSMS have provided a direct or indirect upward push for a large number of Pakistani mathematics institutions. This push resulted in a remarkable increase of graduate students in Pakistan as well as significant enhancement in the quality of research.

ASSMS GC UNIVERSITY LAHORE puts Pakistani Mathematics on world map

The GC University Lahore Abdus Salam School of Mathematics Sciences (GCU ASSMS) put the Pakistani Mathematics on the World map, as the European Mathematical Society (EMS) has acknowledged the school as the Emerging Regional Center of Excellence (ERCE) for its contributions to research at the international level. The recognition implies that young scholars from the developing countries will receive support from the European Union (EU), UNESCO and other international organizations to enroll at GCU ASSMS for advanced studies in diverse areas of Mathematical Sciences. The European Mathematical Society will also get the School European funding for its further improvement and reinforcement. The Mathematical Society has expressed its desire to send their senior mathematicians to the GCU ASSMS for disseminating their knowledge to its faculty and students. The decision to acknowledge GCU ASSMS as the Emerging Regional Centre of Excellence came at a joint meeting of EMS Committee for Developing Countries (CDC) and UNESCO in Budapest. Only three institutions from all over the World are acknowledged by EMS as Emerging Regional Centers of Excellence. The other two are in India and Vietnam.

“The school has indeed put Mathematics on the map of Pakistan and the Pakistani Mathematics on the map of the world,” said the Higher Education Commission Executive Director Dr S Sohail H. Naqvi. He added that that he felt great pride at this prestigious achievement. However, EMS-CDC Vice Chairman and Institute de Mathematiques, Paris Prof. Michel Waldschmidt predicts that Mathematical Sciences have a bright future in Pakistan. He says that the EMS would also provide funds to GCU ASSMS for research, since teaching without any research is not at all desirable, even at graduate level. “If required, the bright students of the centre will be provided scholarships and other necessary support for research and doctorate programme in the institutions of the highest level in Europe,” said Waldschmidt. The EMS-CDC Vice Chairman said that he was a witness to the excellence of Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS) as he had taught there for several months. He believes that Pakistani students are very bright, intelligent, enthusiastic and hardworking.

The European Mathematical Society (EMS) has acknowledged the doctoral school as the Emerging Regional Centre of Excellence (ERCE) for its contributions to research and education at the international level.

Talking about the international recognition of ASSMS, GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Aftab says that Mathematics has been a neglected area in Pakistan for quite a long time. In 2001, the Pakistani government realized for the first time, the very shortage of well-prepared mathematicians in Pakistan. Finally, the Punjab government established in 2003 a school of mathematical sciences under the aegis of Government College University Lahore to serve as a Centre of Excellence for Advanced Studies and Research in Mathematics. “The school was named after former Government College student and Nobel Laureate Dr Abdus Salam,” the Vice Chancellor added.

Prof. Khalid Aftab said that the school, in a short span of seven years, produced 46 PhD scholars in the fields of Mathematics who are serving at different universities and research centers in Pakistan and aboard. . “Only last year, the school produced 17 PhDs and 332 research papers got published in reputed international and national journals,” he said.

Dr. A. D. Raza Choudary Director General ASSMS said that every year hundreds of students apply for ASSMS PhD programme. However, a board of foreign professors selects only 20 to 25 students after a written test and interviews.  We select the best but due to a general weakness in the university education system in Pakistan, even the best students have poor background in several areas of basic university mathematics. To strengthen the foundations of our selected students, ASSMS requires an intensive 2 years course work from all the students admitted to its PhD program, the school director general said. He further said that the school is also concurrently working on promoting mathematics among the children and teenagers for which, it holds training camps every year. “These students were prepared to form the first team of Pakistani participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2005. Within a short span of two years, the Pakistani team went on to win the first medal at IMO 2007. ASSMS also started National Mathematics Olympiad (NMO). The school has hired Professors that have previously been coaches for international teams in Canada and Romania. IMO and NMO now prepare Pakistan’s most brilliant students for international competitions. To make an impact on the more average student, ASSMS initiated an annual “world competition” called Kangaroos of Mathematics. This competition was then handed over to Pakistan Kangaroo Commission. Last year, about 40 thousand students participated, and the Commission distributed medals and cash prizes to the winning students and teachers as a recognition of their efforts for the development of Mathematics.
