About the Programme

TOP

Higher Education Commission of Pakistan in collaboration with the British Council introduced Higher Education Links Programme in Pakistan in 2004 and later on phase II of the programme in 2006 to enhance the research and training capacity of Pakistani higher education institutions, contributing towards the institutional capacity building of the higher education sector of Pakistan.

The purpose of this partnership programme is to enhance the research and training capacity of Higher Education Institutions (HEI's) in Pakistan. Link funds mainly support staff exchange between the faculties of Pakistani and UK institutions. Funds are also available for workshops, conferences, books, equipment and publications to enhance the impact of the link. Through this programme Pakistani institutions are gaining exposure to high quality facilities in the UK and also benefit from curriculum improvement and development. The programme aims to bring Pakistani higher education institutions into a wider network of international partnership and also helps in the course and curriculum development through collaborative research with UK partners. In summary, the HEC - BC Higher Education Links Programme's link activities will lead to one or more of the following outputs:

  • Development of research and training capacity of higher education institutions in Pakistan
  • Improved teaching methodologies
  • Improved management systems within the departments
  • Course and curriculum development
  • Faculty development and
  • Higher education sector reform.

To expand this programme British Council and Higher Education Commission of Pakistan are offering Short PhD Research Attachments, six month research fellowship abroad to full time PhD students enrolled in Pakistan (In the Institutions involved in the HEC-BC JHELP) to enhance their research capabilities. Applicants must be from the Department linked in the HEC-BC Joint Higher Education Links Programme (Phase I & II). Preferably the Applicant should be member of the Link Team. However, if none of the Link Team members fulfil the criteria then a permanent faculty member of the institution, teaching in the linked Department can apply.

The scheme is assisting ongoing Indigenous PhD programs by providing a mechanism for PhD scholars to travel abroad and conduct research in the Partner UK Universities for a period upto 6 months. This is providing exposure to the PhD scholars which will enhance the quality of research that they will be conducting in Pakistan.

British Council is funding this component of the programme.
