GCU STARTS CONSERVATION OF PUNJAB’S DRY LANDS ECOSYSTEMS

The GC University Lahore Sustainable Development Study Centre (GCU SDSC) and Pakistan Botanic Gardens Network Secretariat (PBGNS) have kicked off a project ‘Conservation of Dry Land Ecosystems in Punjab’ to protect the threatened natural communities in Harappa, Shakargarh and Soan Valley. The project, sponsored by the Botanic Gardens Conservation International, UK (BGCI), includes a special focus on community involvement in the conservation process.

Prof. Dr. Aminul Haq, PBGNS Director said land degradation is an emerging and serious environmental threat in Pakistan. He further said that the native species including Salvadora oleoides, Tamarix aphylla, Capparis decidua and Prosopis cineraria, Olea cuspidate, Acacia modesta and Butea monosperma are rapidly vanishing form Harappa, Shakargarh and Soan Valley and need immediate measures for conservation. He further added that the GCU PBGNC is working in close collaboration with World Wild Fund Pakistan, Forest Department and the Government of Punjab to execute the project of BGCI, UK. He also said that the GCU experts and students are also involving the local communities for enhancing the population of these species.

Dr Amin believed that habitat protection is the key to protecting our rare and threatened species because species cannot survive without home.  He said that dry lands does not only hold the key to overcome food scarcity but are also vital for the ecosystem, biodiversity and provision of employment to poor people.

Dr Amin said that preserving tracts of smaller units of land had helped countries of the world to maintain genetic and ecological diversity. He said that GCU PBGNC and Forest Department also held seminar on “creating demonstration sites (in situ) for conservation of Dry-Land Ecosystems” and their experts discussed the issues regarding the implementation of the BGCI project.

The PBGNS Director said that habitat protection can be done in a variety of ways. The first step is to identify where these vanishing species are found. Second is planning for species and habitat protection and management that how can these species can be best protected, and once protected, how can we make sure the species continues healthy in his protected home. He also told that each species and habitat is different and must be planned on a case-by-case basis.

He also stressed that legislation is now required to protect the identified remnant habits in Pakistan so that these special species and their habitat can be protected.
