Newly installed
Pelletron Accelerator at GCU would transform CASP into a hub of
research in Physics: Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab
TOP
Center for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) has completed
installation of its nuclear accelerator funded by the Higher Education
Commission. The Vice Chancellor GCU Lahore Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab said
on the occasion that this accelerator would be used as an effective
device in order to detect, diagnose and treat the patients suffering
from cancer. He said that it is a great addition in the GCU laboratories
as it will transform CASP into a hub of research in Physics and would
help researchers in excelling in the realm of research based activities.
Director CASP Dr. I. M. Ghauri said that the atomic
accelerator has been purchased from the
National Electrostatic Corporation of USA with the
cost of 69.68 million rupees allocated by Higher Education Commission of
Pakistan for the rejuvenation of High Tension Laboratory of GCU Centre
for Advanced Studies in Physics. It is a 2-million volt latest device
based on modern technology, he added. He said that CASP is already
bedecked with latest devices like ND Yag Laser Transmission electroscope
and scanning electron microscope and has already been extending
facilities to the students of University of the Punjab, Agriculture
University Faisalabad, BZU Multan and Islamia University Bahawalpur. Ho
told that this Pelletron nuclear accelerator is ever first machine in
the country to be installed in any university. This machine has enabled
CASP to introduce M. Phil and Ph. D programs in applied sciences and
technology. He further said that with the installation of the
accelerator, our students would conduct modern research in environmental
sciences, archaeology, medicine, agriculture and medical sciences
besides facilitating the researchers in nuclear Physics and atomic
sciences, he maintained. One of its wonderful use is there in developing
the Nano technology and in the diagnosis of cancer patients. He said
that the accelerator would be used for the production of short-lived
isotopes which can be used for scanning the whole body of a cancer
patient. He further said that the accelerator produced isotopes would be
injected into the body of the cancer patient which emit radiations and
produce perfect image of the cancer effected tissues without damaging
the normal tissues of human body, he continued. He also gave a
comprehensive detail of the usage of the accelerator in the
manufacturing of Semi-Conducting Wafers which are very widely used in
the production of micro-electronics. He further told that experts from
National Centre of Physics Islamabad
consisting of Dr.
Abdul Waheed, Dr. Anwar and Eng. Atta Muhammad have also got training of
Palletron accelerator from the American Engineers.
Dr. I. M. Ghauri Director CASP thanked the Vice Chancellor
for taking keen interest in providing generous funds for the development
