One Day Workshop on Laser
Ablation and its Applications at Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics
(CASP) GC University, Lahore May 19, 2011
Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics formally known as
high Tension Laboratory and Nuclear Research Laboratory was established
in 1954. The first accelerator (1.2 MeV Cockraft-Walton) of South East
Asia was installed by Dr. R. M. Chaudhri in this Centre, which made
significant contribution to promote science culture in Pakistan. The
CASP has emerged, in recent years, as hub of R&D activities at GC
University Lahore. Establishment of new research laboratories equipped
with state of the art equipment like Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM),
Pelletron Accelerator, Universal Material Testing Machines and Advanced
Materials Fabrication facilities have made the centre distinct among
other departments of the University. In addition to these facilities
various state of the art UV, visible, and IR lasers with pulse width
ranging from nanoseconds to femtoseconds are also available in our
Centre including Nd:YAG, Excimer, Ti:Sapphire and laser-induced
breakdown spectroscopy systems. We are working in the field of
• Laser Ablation
• Laser Surface Modifications
• Thin Film Deposition by Lasers
• Ion implantation by laser-produced plasmas
• Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

GCU equipped to fabricate, test
advanced alloys
Prof.
Dr. Khalid Aftab Vice Chancellor inaugurated Materials Fabrication and
Characterization Laboratories for fabricating and testing advanced
alloys at CASP. The Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab inspected the
working of the machinery. The laboratories established with a cost of Rs
80 million are one of most high-tension facilities available to any
educational institution in Pakistan. The Higher Education Commission has
provided funds for the purchase of the high-tech machinery whereas the
engineers from China, Japan, England and Singapore provided the
technical support for the establishment of the laboratories.

and Characterization Laboratories at CASP.
Speaking
on the occasion, the vice chancellor said that GCU has always encouraged
innovative and qualitative research and would provide all facilities to
its students for this purpose. He called on the researchers to work for
the self-reliance of the country in the field of science of technology.
He also issued directions to the centre management to always keep the
equipment operational, so that the maximum researchers can draw benefit
out of them.
CASP
Director
Prof. Dr. Ijaz
Mujtaba Ghauri briefed the Vice Chancellor about the working
various equipments at the laboratory and research projects being carried
out through these equipments. He said that the laboratory houses
transmission electron microscope which provides high magnifications to
view distances of few angstroms (10-10 meters). The scanning electron
microscope greatly magnifies the surface of a sample to study the
effects of various treatments the sample has received. Talking about the
Universal Testing Machine Laboratory,
Prof Ghauri
said that 50 and 150 Kilo Newton Universal Testing Machines in this
laboratory can perform tension and bending tests under thermostatically
controlled temperature environment ranging between -180 °C to 600 °C.
“The operation of these machines is fully software controlled,” he
added. In Non-Destructive Testing Laboratory, imperfections and defects
in materials are discovered using acoustic emissions, fluorescent dyes
and other similar techniques.

DR SAMAR MUBARAKMAND INaugurates
Rs 110m atomic accelerator, laser labs at CASP GC UNIVERSITY LAHORE
Renowned
Nuclear Scientist, Member Planning Commission of Pakistan on Science and
Technology Dr Samar on Saturday inaugurated the recently-installed Rs 70
million high-tech 4 MeV Pelletron Accelerator and Rs 40 million Laser
Laboratories at the GC University, Lahore Centre for Advanced Studies in
Physics (GCU CASP). GCU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab was also present
on this occasion.
Speaking
on the occasion, Dr Samar gave wake-up call to the national scientists,
saying Pakistan is extremely rich in minerals especially coal, copper
and gold and what it needed is indigenous technology for exploitation
of these resources. We should not let the foreigners to exploit our
resources and pay us peanuts in form of royalty. He said that Pakistan
had gold and copper reserves of trillions of dollars in Balochistan.
“The gold will become so cheap in Pakistan if we mine it indigenously”
he said. He also highlighted the importance of Thar coal projects of
Pakistan.

Dr. Samar Mubarakmanad inspects Atomic Accelerator
along with Vice Chancellor and others
Dr Samar
who remained associated with Pakistan’s Nuclear and Missile Programme
for 42 years called on the national scientists to design their research
projects on a par with the industrial and economic needs of Pakistan. Dr
Samar who studied at the Government College Lahore for 6 years (1956-62)
placed a great emphasis on organising on national and international
science conferences and seminars so that coordinated efforts can be made
develop new technologies indigenously. He remembered that he as Director
GC High Tension Laboratory from 1974 to 1977 invited a large number of
scholars to the research facility and produced about 20 research papers
in a short period of 3 years.
Dr Samar
talking to GCU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab made liberal offers for
help by the Planning Commission in installation more high-tech
equipments at GCU CASP for research. The Vice Chancellor also sought
the help of the Higher Education Commission and the Pakistan Planning
Commission in its faculty development programmes.
Earlier,
Director CASP Dr Ijaz M Ghauri briefed Dr Samar about the recently
installed high equipments at CASP including Materials Testing Lab,
Materials Fabrication Lab, Transmission Electron Microscopy Lab,
Scanning Electron Microscopy Lab and Sample Preparation lab. The
Materials Testing Laboratory houses 50 kN and 150 kN Universal Testing
Machines which can perform compression, tension and bending tests from
180 to 600 degree Celsius. The Director CASP said that the Centre was
established in 1954 as Nuclear Research Laboratory. The principal
research facility here was 1.2 MeV Cock Craft Walton Accelerator which
is still operational. Hoe, however, said new accelerator can be used
for production of isotopes, nuclear reaction studies, mass spectrometry,
atomic collisions and modification of materials.
Later
Dr. Samar visited the various sections of CASP and lauded the Centre’s
research facilities. GCU Rafi Chair Professor Dr Nisar Ahmad also
briefed Dr Samar about the research project of GCU science scholars.
