STATUS
OF STUDENT
-
A student admitted to any discipline in GC University Lahore shall
be a full time student, enrolled for on-campus studies.
-
No
student shall get admission in another course of study in this
University or any other Institution during his/her
enrollment as a student of any discipline of GC University Lahore.
-
No
student shall accept any employment or work in any organization
(private or public) during his/her
enrollment as a bonafide student of this University. However this
condition shall not apply to the students admitted in
self-supporting / evening programs. Such students shall have to
submit a “No Objection Certificate” from their employer.
GRADING SYSTEM
Final grade in each course shall be awarded to the students on the basis
of marks obtained by the students and his/her relative position in the
class in the respective course. These grades then translated into Grade
Points (GP). For determining a students standing at the end of every
semester, the Grade Point Average (GPA) system shall be used.

GRADE POINT (GP)
Grade Point = Numeric Value of Grade x Credit Hours
GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)
Performance in any semester is reported in Grade Point Average. This is
the average of weighted grade points earned in the courses taken during
the semester. The Grade Point Average is obtained by dividing the sum of
Grade Points attained in each course by the total number of Credit hours
for that semester.

SEMESTER GRADE POINT AVERAGE (SGPA)
Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) shows the performance of a student
during a Semester. It is calculated by dividing the sum of Grade Points
attained in each course of a semester by the total number of Credit
hours for that semester.

CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (CGPA):
Cumulative Grade
Point
Average is the up-to-date mean of the Grade Points earned by the student
in a Programme of study. It is an indication of student’s overall
performance at any point in the programme. It is calculated by dividing
the total of Grade Points attained by the student in all semesters by
the total number of credit hours for all the semesters.

CREDIT HOURS
Credit hours are weights assigned to a course. One credit is equivalent
to One hour of class per week for course of theory and two hours of
laboratory work per week for the course of practical for an academic
semester.
TRANSFER OF CREDIT HOURS
A case of transfer of credit hours will be decided by the Equivalence
Committee in consultation with the Academic Committee of the concerned
department.
INDISCIPLINE IN EXAMINATIONS
Any candidate who:

i
submits forged or fake documents in connection with the examination.
ii commits impersonation in the examination.
iii copies from any paper, book or notes.
iv
mutilates the Answer Book.
v
possesses any kind of material, which may be helpful to him/her in the
examination.
vi
does any thing, which he/she should not do morally or legally in
connection with the examination and which may be helpful to him/her in
the examination.
vii
refuses to obey the examination staff or refuses to follow the
instructions issued by the University in connection with the
examination.
viii
misbehaves or creates any kind of disturbance in or around the
examination centre.
ix
uses abusive or obscene language in an Answer Script.
x
possesses any kind of weapon in or around examination centre.
His /Her case will be referred to the Discipline Committee for
Examination which after due investigation, if found guilty, will expel
the student forever from the University.
PLAGIARISM
The
act of using some one else’s original ideas or work and then submitting
it in his/her own name without acknowledging the source is strictly
prohibited. Such case will be classified as Plagiarised. In case any
student is found guilty of Plagiarism in any form, his/her case will be
referred to the Dean of respective discipline by the Chairperson of the
Department. The Dean after due investigation, if found sufficient
evidence against the student, shall forfeit the work of the candidate
and ask the Registrar for the cancellation of his/her admission under
intimation to the Vice Chancellor. No appeal shall be entertained in
such cases.
PERMISSION OF WRITER FOR SPECIAL STUDENTS
-
A
blind student may be allowed to attempt the Tests/ Examinations of
the University on Braille or Computer.
-
In case a student is physically handicapped, he/she may apply to the
Controller of Examinations for permission to engage a writer in a
Tests/Examinations of the University and if permitted he/she will be
allowed 45 minutes (maximum) extra time to solve the Question Paper.
-
The qualification of the person who acts as writer of a handicapped
student must be at least one step lower than that of the student.
(e.g. for a B.A./B.Sc. student, the writer should be at the most F.A./F.Sc.
etc.)
MEDICAL CERTIFICATE
Medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner duly endorsed
by the University Medical Officer is acceptable for the Examination
purposes in the University.
RECHECKING OF SCRIPTS
-
A candidate can apply for rechecking of the answer script of Final
Examination within 15 days of the date of declaration of result.
-
During Re-checking, Total marks of the answer script, unmarked
questions, award lists and result sheet will be checked by the
Re-checking committee. The Answer Scripts once marked shall not be
re-evaluated.
SEMESTER FREEZE
-
A
student may take a Semester off due to unavoidable circumstances by
applying for a Semester Freeze. Such student must submit an
application, verified by the parents, to the Registrar Office duly
recommended by the Academic Committee of the concerned department.
-
The application for Semester Freeze should be submitted by the
student within TWO weeks of the start of the Semester. No
application for Semester Freeze will be entertained after this
period. (i.e. Two weeks from the start of semester)
-
A Student may apply for freeze in at the most Two semesters, subject
to the maximum length of the program.
-
Such a student should rejoin the same Semester in the following
academic year and he/she should complete the program within six
years.
PROGRAM BREAK UP FOR FOUR YEAR (HONS.) GRADUATION PREGRAM:
-
Four year (Hons.) Graduation program is divided into four academic
years (named as Year-I, Year-II, Year-III and Year-IV).

Each academic year is divided into Two Semesters.

The maximum duration allowed to a student for the completion of Hons.
Degree is Six years.

A student has to complete at least 124-136 credit hours study, out of
which 06 Credit Hours are of Dissertation, for the completion of
Degree, subject to passing all the courses offered.

He/she has to score 2.30 CGPA at the end of program for the award of
Degree.

MID SEMESTER TEST:
-
A Mid Semester Test will be conducted in the Ninth
week.
-
The mode of Test shall be essentially written. Every
candidate must take every Examination except in case of serious
illness or exceptional circumstances.
-
Mid Semester Test will be conducted by the
Chairperson of the concerned department in coordination with the
Controller of Examinations.
-
The question paper shall be designed by the teacher
of the concerned department.
-
The Attendance Sheet of Mid Semester Test will be
sent to the Office of the Controller of Examinations after half an
hour of the start of paper on the day of Test.
-
The result of Mid Semester Test shall be sent by the
Chairperson of the Department to the Controller of Examinations
within 05 days positively after the last day of Mid Semester Test.
-
The result of Mid Semester Test and Semester Work
once submitted by the Chairperson of the department to the
Controller of Examinations will not be revised.
-
A student who remains absent in the Mid Semester
Tests partially or wholly due to illness/unavoidable circumstances
/death in the immediate family /natural calamity/ participation in
Sports/Co-curricular activities on behalf of the University shall be
allowed to appear in the Make-up Test in courses in which he/she
remains absent in the Mid Semester Tests. The absentees shall have
to file an application with documentary proof for permission to
appear in the Make-up Test to the Controller of Examinations within
07 days after the Mid Semester Tests. In case of illness the student
should get the Medical Certificate countersigned by the University
Medical Officer within Three days of his/her absence. His/her
eligibility to appear in the Make-up Test shall be decided by the
Controller of Examinations. No further chance will be given to a
student who fails/remains absent in the Make up Test of Mid Semester
Tests.
ATTENDANCE CRITERIA:
-
A
student must attend 85 percent of the lectures delivered in each
course in a semester to be eligible to appear in the Final
Examination of that course.
-
In case a student does not attend 85% of the lectures delivered in
any course/s in a Semester, he/she will not be allowed to appear in
the Final Examination of that course/s. He/she will be awarded “In”
(Incomplete) grade in such course/s. Such students will have to
repeat the concerned course/s in a forthcoming Semester which offers
the course/s.
-
The list of Eligible candidates for the Final Examination shall be
notified by the Controller of Examinations before the start of Final
Examination of each Semester.
FINAL EXAMINATION OF SEMESTER:
-
There will be a Final Examination at the end of each Semester
covering the whole prescribed syllabus for each course.
-
The Final Examination shall be conducted by the Chairperson of the
Department in coordination with the Controller of Examinations.
-
The Internal Examiner will set Question Paper for Final Examination
and send the question paper in a sealed envelope to the Controller
of Examinations One month before the date of Final Examination set
by the Office of Controller of Examinations.
-
Each theory paper shall be of 50 marks.
-
The weightage of Syllabus for the Question Paper of Final
Examination should be as follows:
o
Up till Mid Semester Test
25%
o
From Mid Semester Test to Final Examination 75%
-
There will be One Compulsory Question of 10 marks containing MCQs
(each MCQ should have 05 five alternate choices) and 05 Descriptive
Questions of 10 marks each. A student has to attempt 04 Descriptive
Questions out of 05.
-
The Questions either MCQs or Descriptive should be applied in
nature.
-
The Attendance Sheet of Final Examination will be sent to the Office
of the Controller of Examinations after half an hour of the start of
Examination.
-
The Internal Examiner will mark the Answer Scripts and return the
same alongwith the Award List to the Controller of Examination
within 05 Days.
GENERAL CRITERIA FOR QUALIFYING A SEMESTER:
-
A student shall qualify the course if he/she scores
at least 40% marks in the Semester Work, Mid Semester Test and Final
Examination combined.
-
A student shall qualify the semester if CGPA is at
least 2.30.
-
No grace marks will be awarded to the students.
-
A student who scores CGPA between 1.50 and 2.30 in a
Semester; may be conditionally promoted to the next semester and
he/she will be placed on probation. In case he/she fails to score
2.30 CGPA in the Semester of Probation, his/her name will be dropped
from the University Rolls.
-
A student, who fails to score a minimum of 1.50 CGPA
at the end of any Semester, will be dropped from the program.
-
A student will be given Only one chance to improve
the “F” or ”In” Grade.
-
A student can be given only one chance to improve a
course with grade less than B- in a Semester after which his/her
CGPA is below 2.30. The improvement is only possible by repeating
the course/s alongwith the forthcoming semester which offers the
course/s, subject to the maximum length of the program.
-
In case a student does not have 2.30 CGPA at the end
of Semester-VIII, he/she may be allowed to get re-admission in One
or more courses, in which his/her Grade is below “B-”, alongwith the
forthcoming semester, subject to the maximum length of the program.
-
A student who has been dropped from the University
Rolls for the first time may get Re-admission in the program once
subject to the maximum length of the program. In case a student is
dropped from the University Rolls for the second time no further
chance will be given to him/her for studies in GCUL.
-
A student who gets re-admission in the program will
get exemption for the courses which he/she has qualified with grade
higher than C+, (i.e. B- and above). Such student will have to
complete the Degree within maximum length allowed for the program.
DISSERTATION:
-
Dissertation is a compulsory requirement for the degree of
Graduation.
-
The Dissertation will be of 06 Credit Hours.
-
40% marks are required to qualify the Dissertation.
-
The Dissertation, which is accepted after evaluation, shall become
the property of GC University, Lahore. One copy will be kept in the
Departmental Library, one in the Main Library and one by the
Convener.
QUALIFYING EXAMINATION:
-
At the end of Four Year (Hons.) Graduation program
the Controller of Examinations will conduct an Externally Evaluated
qualifying Examination that shall cover the major courses studied
during the program.
-
A student will be eligible to appear in the
Qualifying Examination who has qualified all the Semesters.
-
A student shall qualify the Examination if he/she
scores 50% marks in each paper.
-
A student will be given only One chance (Re-sit) to
qualify the Examination after the first Examination.
-
A student will be awarded Degree only if he/she
qualifies this Qualifying Examination.
POSITION AND GOLD MEDAL IN FOUR YEAR (HONS.) GRADUATION PROGRAMS:
Gold Medal shall be awarded to a student in each major/
subject who has topped the list of the successful candidates; provided
that he /she has passed the Final Examinations of all Semesters and
Qualifying Examination in first chance offered by the University. The
Re-admission cases in the same or revised courses or new courses leading
to the change of nomenclature of the Degree or cases of Semester Break/
Probation/ Marks Improvement will not be considered for the award of
Gold Medal/Position. The first position shall be determined on the basis
of Total Marks obtained in all Semesters.
A student who gets 1st, 2nd and 3rd position in order of
merit in each major / subject will be awarded Academic Roll of Honour,
Academic Certificate of Distinction and Academic Certificate of Merit
respectively. The positions will be determined on the basis of Total
Marks obtained in all Semesters, provided that he /she has passed Final
Examinations of all Semesters and Qualifying Examination in first chance
offered by the University. The Re-admission cases in the same or revised
courses or new courses leading to the change of nomenclature of the
Degree or cases of Semester Break/ Probation/ Marks Improvement will not
be considered for the award of Position.

Course Work of MS./M.Phil. is Two years from the date of first
admission.

A student of M.S./M.Phil. will be given One year for the completion
of Thesis. An extension of one more year may be given in case of non
submission, or rejection of Thesis.

A student has to complete at least 36 credit hours study, out of
which 12 Credit Hours are of Thesis, for the completion of Degree,
subject to passing all the courses offered.

He/she has to score 2.50 CGPA at the end of program for the award of
Degree.

University Rolls for the second time no further chance will be given
to him/her for studies in GCUL.

A student who gets re-admission in the program will get exemption
for the courses which he/she has qualified with grade higher than
C+, (i.e. B- and above). Such student will have to complete the
Degree within maximum length allowed for the program.
THESIS/ PROJECT:
-
Thesis /Project is a compulsory requirement for the degree of
Masters/ MS/ M.Phil..
-
The Thesis / Project for Masters Program will be of 06 Credit Hours.
-
The Thesis for MS/ M.Phil Program will be of 12 Credit Hours.
-
50% marks are required to qualify the Thesis /Dissertation /Project.
-
The Thesis /Dissertation /Project, which is accepted after
evaluation, shall become the property of GC University, Lahore. One
copy will be kept in the Departmental Library, one in the Main
Library and one by the Convener
