France offers scholarships to 90 promising students of Six Pakistani Universities INCLUDING GCU Lahore

France Embassy in Islamabad signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) concerning the funding by France of scholarship for Pakistani Students. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was arranged by His Excellency the Ambassador of France to Pakistan Mr. Philippe Thiébaud at the Embassy with Chairperson HEC Dr. Javaid R. Laghari as the chief guest. Vice Chancellors of the corresponding universities/institutions participated in the ceremony. This scholarship grant scheme will further strengthen the close and long term bilateral friendship between the Government of Pakistan and Government of France.

In Pakistan, currently, less than 8% of the 17-23 age groups are enrolled in any form of higher education. The “Needs based scholarships program” is one answer to this challenge. This program will enable young people, primarily from FATA, KPK and Baluchistan, to pursue their education in top universities/institutions of Pakistan.

France, through its Embassy in Islamabad, is offering scholarships to 90 promising students of 6 Pakistani Universities. Those scholarships will be offered in the fields of Social Science, Business and Architecture. The list of the universities includes: Quaid-E-Azam University, Islamabad, COMSATS Institute of Technology, Islamabad, GC University, Lahore, Institute of Management Sciences (IMSciences), Peshawar, Institute of Business and Management, Karachi and Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University, Quetta.

The scholarships awards are designed to cover the complete cost of education during the entire academic program of the 90 recipients (e.g.2-4 years for the MBA, BBA & Social Sciences) for a total cost of 23millions PKR. The selection process will ensure that at least 25% of the awarded scholarships go to ladies, especially those coming from areas of Pakistan where the access to higher education is difficult.

Rs 20.127 million scholarships given to GCU STUDENTS

The GC University Lahore first-time gave away the scholarships of a record amount of Rs 20.127 million to the its deserving students besides cutting down its fee by 35 percent. “The scholarships are disbursed during the financial year 2011-12 among 939 needy students, who could not afford their academic expenses,” stated in the GCU Annual Scholarships Report presented by GCU Treasurer Shafiq Mughal to Vice Chancellor Prof. (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman. The Vice Chancellor, despite the severe financial crunch and budget cuts, allocated the record amount from the University’s budget and GCU Endowment Fund Trust (EFT) and transparently disbursed it through GCU Scholarships & Financial Aid Committee. The report concludes that as many as 1,243 deserving students of GCU got various scholarships Rs 29.507 during the finical year 2011-12.

The GCU Annual Scholarships Report also states that during 2011-12, as many as 86 GCU students won Rs 0.249 million from National Talent Scholarship and 19 got Rs 0.783 million from HEC Higher Education Opportunities Scholarship, while seven students received Rs 35,500 from Quaid-e-Azam and Mora scholarships. Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal also gave away scholarships of Rs 0.608 million to 19 GCU students. As many as 174 students of GCU were given scholarships of Rs 7.7 million from the Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF).

The report states that the scholarships of Rs 16.05 million were given away from the GCU Budget while Rs 4.077 were given to needy students from the donations of Old Ravians to GCU Endowment Fund Trust. “Budget cuts and no funds –this is what is being done to the universities, but we can’t do the same with our students who are highly talented but cannot afford their academic expenses,” said Vice Chancellor Prof. Khaleeq while commenting on the report.

The Vice Chancellor said that ever year, more than 2000 students apply for financial aid at GCU and till 2010-11 maximum 400 students were granted scholarships. “But, this year we broke all the previous records and increased the allocation for scholarships by 150 percent and also reduced the University’s fee by 35 percent to facilitate students,” he added.

Prof. Khaleeq requested the Punjab Government and Higher Education Commission of Pakistan to provide separate grants to universities for granting scholarships and financial aid to the needy students. He also called on philanthropists and Old Ravians to support the needy students through the GCU Endowment Fund Trust. He expressed his firm resolve that GCU would not leave its deserving students in the lurch and despite all financial constraints it would make all possible efforts to provide financial aid to them.
