Introduction

The
Department of Geography of GCU can be traced back to 1931-32, when
Geography was introduced as a subject at the then Government College
Lahore. The Department was formally established in 1936. A number of
eminent scholars and professors contributed to the growth of the
Department. Professors of stature associated with the Department over
the years have been Prof. Muhammad Nazar, Prof. A. N. Kapur, Prof. Aziz
Ahmed Sheikh, Prof. Muhammad Aslam, Prof. Aziz-ur-Rehman, Prof. Muhammad
Nawaz and Prof. Masud-ul-Hassan Bokhari.

The
faculty at the Department is cognisant of the concerns and challenges of
the Globalised world. The Department has recently redesigned its BA/BSc
(Hons.) syllabi and courses to train young minds for advanced
professional careers. The newly launched Undergraduate Programme covers
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Spatial Planning,
Geometrics (Total Station, Auto Level, GPS) and Advance Courses in
Geomorphology and Climatology.

Library
The
Department has a Reference Library with a collection of 1, 000 books.
New books on GIS, Remote sensing, Climate change, Spatial planning,
etc., are added to our shelves every year. Some selected research
journals are also available in the Library.
Garrett Geography Society
The
Garrett Geography Society provides the students and staff members with a
platform for active and regular activities related to all the
disciplines of Geography. The Society also arranges study tours on a
regular basis.

Future Prospects
After
graduating, our students can apply for MSc in Community Development and
Environmental Planning. Graduates have a number of career
openings in both the private and public sectors. They can become Town
Planners, Land Use Surveyors, GIS experts in irrigation, GIS experts in
Spatial and Urban Planning, experts in Auto Levelling, etc.
