Introduction

The Department of
Arabic and Islamic Studies is one of the oldest Departments of GC
University Lahore. Dr. G.W. Leitner, Orientalist, Professor of Arabic
and the first Principal of Government College Lahore, founded the
Department in 1864. Later, Islamic Studies was introduced as an elective
subject at Government College Lahore. Since 1980, Islamic Education is
being taught as a compulsory subject, both at the Intermediate and
Undergraduate levels. In 2005, a 4-Year Degree Programme was launched
and Islamic Studies was introduced as a major subject. The Department
also offers a Certificate course in Arabic Language. Dedicated teachers
have given their best to the Department. Eminent scholars like Prof.
Inayatullah, Prof. Abdul Qayyum, Dr. A.S. Agha, Dr. Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq
Sufi, Dr. S. M. Zaman, Dr. Muhammad Baha-ul-Haq Rana, Prof. Rafi Ullah
Shahab, Prof. Khurshid-ul-Hasan Rizvi, Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad Saeed and
Prof. Khan Muhammad Chawla have served the Department as Chairpersons
over the years. Dr. Humayun Abbas
is the
current Chairperson of the Department.
Research
The Department
publishes a research journal, the Journal of Islamic Research on an
annual basis.
Academic Programme
