The mass media are implicated in all that happens today,
the world has become unknowable without a discerning press. This makes
communication training both a practical matter and a moral one as well.
In GCU Journalism was introduced as an elective subject at the
undergraduate level by the Department of Political Science in 1987. When
Government College Lahore was awarded the status of a University in
2002, the nomenclature of the subject was changed to Mass Communication.
In September 2007, the Department of Mass Communication was established
under the supervision of the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
The mission of Department of Mass Communication is “To
maintain a supportive, concerned relationship with its students; devoted
to generate intellectual excitement in its students; transforming their
lives by teaching the students to think critically and creatively while
preparing them for careers in mass communication”. The department
prepares its students in multiple ways as a result, helping them reach
across the various communication disciplines for new insights, new
skills, new forms of expression and new kinds of employment.

To produce graduates in the discipline of mass
communication with good communication skills and up-dated knowledge.

To produce good Sub-Editors and Reporters by training
them theoretically in the lecture room and practically in media.

To equip the students with the time demanded media
production and IT skills to meet the demand of the electronic and
print media organizations.

To produce Media Planner and Account Executives for
Advertising Agencies.
By keeping in view
the practical needs of students the department has also established
Young Journalists’ Society (YJS).
Facilities
Mass Communication Department facilitates the students
with well equipped computer lab, library and modern study guide lines.
Special Features
Students avail opportunity to visit news room, production
control room, studios and transmission room of various TV stations,
familiarity with newspaper and radio organizations as well.
Career Scope/ Opportunities
Mass communication is getting popularity. The way events
are emerging round the world today, opportunities are increasing in this
field. Print and electronic media offer tremendous career options in
Journalism. The situation of journalism in Pakistan has totally changed
now. Increase in literacy rate, industrial development and advancement
in technology have pleasantly affected the print and electronic media in
Pakistan. More than sixty news and entertainment television channels are
broadcasting their Programmes today. The traditional miserable
situations of news papers are totally changed. It is therefore a very
attractive career choice for the youth. Hardworking and aspiration to
get perfection in this field result a very successful career.
