The 97th edition of the oldest academic literary magazine
of the sub-continent “The Ravi” has come out on Saturday with
literary and research articles by noted writers, professors, old
Ravians and the university students.
The Ravi, a contemporary of London Times Literary
Supplement, has been a part of the sub-continent’s literary heritage
for the last one hundred and ten years. This publication, which
began in 1900, has now seen the end of the first decade of the 21st
century, serving to enlighten people by gathering together voices
from all over the globe.
GCU Vice Chancellor said that the
main objective of The Ravi is to explore the literary talent among
the university students, adding that it provides them a medium of
self-expression. “It is a necessary aid to the fostering of literary
environment in the university,” he added. He further said that the
literary magazine had been named after the river Ravi, adding that
the flowing river is refereed as the symbolic continuity of ideas,
thoughts, feelings and rich sentiments of the GCU students, alumni
and faculty members which are expressed through the magazine. He
said people like Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, A.S Bukhari
and N.M Rashid are among its former editors.

carefully kept safe all the editions of the magazine Keeping in view
the modern needs of the students, we have digitized The Ravi and now
the indexing with complete bibliographic details and partial full
text of the magazine is accessible on GCU LAN. However electronic

dictator”, he said adding that from Ayub Khan to Pervaiz Musharaf, he
always questioned all of them in their briefings that ‘Saadi jann kadon
chaddo ge’ (when will they go?). He said that the real task of the army
was to secure our national frontiers, while the nation was ready to
render any sacrifice for the soldiers standing at guard on the national

Opening the debate,
Zeenia Mansoor, a student BSc (Honors) in Biotechnology, drew the
audience’s attention to the vast economic potential of Pakistan in
minerals, agriculture, livestock, dairy and above all human resource.
Looking at the negative side of the motion, Kamran Hussain Hashmi, a
student of intermediate, opined that sovereignty – economic and
political – could only be safeguarded through across the board
accountability so that foreign loans could be rightly utilized for
national uplift and paid back within the stipulated time. The center
point of his debate was that a knife is not harmful per say. Rather, it
was the peculiar use that labeled it as good or bad. The most vociferous
defense of economic self-reliance came from Saadul Hassan, a student of
BA (Hons) in English literature. He came down heavily on the political
elite who put the nation’s destiny in jeopardy in return for their
vested interests. He chided the decision makers who held reins of this
country for the last 63 years for having proved to be a modern-day
Faustus who sell their souls to the Devil for the sake of power and
vanity. He deplored the fate of every new-born Pakistani baby who
inherits a debt of Rs 30,000 at the time of his/her birth – a gift from
the ruling junta! Concluding the debate Noorus Saba, a student of BSc (Hons)
in Chemistry, stressed the dire need to strengthen the mechanism of
accountability, so that the looters and plunderers could be brought to
the book. She believed that there was no harm if the countries helped
each other. All that was needed was the right utilization of foreign
debt.
The speakers
interspersed their discourse with emotionally charged verses by Mirza
Ghalib, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Habib Jalib. Nazir Ahmed Music Society
played Kalam-e-Iqbal and inspirational national songs at the occasion.

GCU LAHORE
turns 147
The Government College University Lahore, the oldest seat
of learning in Pakistan, has turned 147 year old as it opened its doors
for students in Lahore’s Walled City in January 1864. Addressing the
Founder’s Day Celebrations at the Abdus Salam Hall, GCU Vice Chancellor
Dr. Khalid Aftab said that the position which GCU holds today in
academic world is the result of hard labor of 147 years. He said that
the academic travel started in 1864 with just nine students and three
teachers produced hundreds of scholars, scientists and literary figures
including Poet of East Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Pakistan’s only Nobel
Laureate Prof Dr Abdus Salam. “The GC University blends grand old
traditions and modern educational standards to meet the ideals set by
its founding fathers,” He added. Talking about the history establishment
of the Government College, Prof. Aftab said that in April 1871 the
college was moved from the Haveli of Dayan Singh to a large Bungalow
near Anarkali. In 1873 its location was changed to another house called
Rahim Khans Kothi. It was in 1876 that the college moved into the
present grand gothic-style building with a cost of about Rs 320,000.
The Vice Chancellor also remembered the efforts of Dr
Leitner, the founder Principle of Government College, established it on
the pattern of College of London, UK. He said that the Government
College was sanctioned in 1856 with the condition that the teachers
should be graduates of Oxford, Cambridge, Dublin or Durham, He hoped the
GCU future generations would maintain its wonderful traditions of
academic excellence, research, promotion of new ideas and above all,
respect for others’ belief and views.
He said that the Government College had initially
affiliated with the University of Calcutta as the Punjab University was
not established at that time.
The GCU deans, academic and administrative heads of
departments were also present at the Founders’ Day Celebrations.
