GCU HOSTS PATRAS-FAIZ
SEMINAR
The Urdu
Department GCU hosted a Patras-Faiz Seminar to mark the
death anniversary of Prof. Ahmed Shah Bokhari 'Patras' – the
great writer, translator, teacher, broadcaster and finally a
diplomat at the highest levels of the United Nations, and to
pay tribute to Fiaz Ahmad Fiaz – a noted poet and student
Prof. Ahmed Shah Bokhari 'Patras'. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof.
(Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq ur Rehman; Izaz-I-Kamal
was the chief guest at the seminar which was also addressed
by Faiz’ grandson Ali Madeeh Hashmi, Faiz’ daughter Muneeza
Hashmi, Patras’ son Haroon Bokhari, Dr. Saadat Saeed and Dr.
Shafeeq Aajmi.
Addressing the seminar, Prof. Khaleeq said that
the
GC
University is proud to be the
alma
mater
of great poets and
men of letters
like Allama Muhammad Iqbal,
Prof. Ahmed Shah Bokhari 'Patras'
and Faiz Ahmed Faiz and will keep their traditions alive.
He
said the literary works of these great men
are like lampposts
which guide them to peace and progress. The Vice Chancellor
also highlighted the various aspects of
'Patras'
and
Faiz’s
personality.
Speaking
on the occasion, Ali Madeeh Hashmi remembered Prof. Ahmed
Shah Bokhari 'Patras', as Professor of English at Government
College Lahore, was merciless on students who did not
display originality of thought. One former student, author
Kanhaiya Lal Kapoor, writes in an essay: "In my first exam,
I wrote several quotes from famous critics and writers. Mr.
Bokhari gave me a zero and wrote 'you have written verbatim
quotes in several places from FL Lucas and Professor Quiller-Couch.
They were my teachers in Cambridge and obviously I am not
qualified to be their examiner. I am examining you.'"
He said
that 'Faiz’ and ‘Patras’ had a close personal friendship in
addition to a student-mentor one. While Faiz always spoke
reverently of his teacher, Bokhari, in typically irreverent
style, once wrote to Faiz's wife Alys from London a few
months before his death in 1958: "I would love to hear news
of your household but also know that he [Faiz] never will
write since he is an intoxicated poet ["shair-e-must"]. I
heard somewhere that he is being sent to jail then heard
that the offer of hospitality had been withdrawn. I cannot
decide what I find funnier, that they are going to lock him
up or that they are not. You and I would prefer, of course,
that he remain with us rather than us going around filling
forms to see him." Speaking on the occasion, Faiz’ daughter
Muneeza Hashmi shared her childhood interactions with
legendary Patras Bokhari who had come to share a few moments
with a pupil he loved dearly, Faiz.
Dr.
Saadat Saeed and Dr. Shafeeq Aajmi also paid tribute of
‘Patras’ and ‘Faiz’.
The Debating Society’s public-speakers presented an
oratorical rendition of Faiz’s verses and
Patras Bokhari’s literary writings
in the tradition of the legendary Zulfiqar Bokhari and Zia
Moeud Deen, while the musicians and singer of GCU Nazir
Ahmed Music Society also presented Kalam-e-Faiz.

GC UNIVERSITY LAHORE HOLDS
SEMINAR ON IQBAL’S PHILOSOPHY AND CONTEMPORARY PAKISTAN
GC
University Lahore organized a one-day seminar on “Iqbal’s
Philosophy and Cotemporary Pakistan,” (Fiqr-e-Iqbal and Aaj
Ka Pakistan) to enlighten the youth about the visionary
thoughts of the great national poet. GCU Vice Chancellor
Prof. (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman chaired
the seminar while PML-N Member National Assembly Ahsan Iqbal
was the Key Speaker. Opening the seminar, the members of
Nazir Ahmed Music Society (NAMS) presented several poems of
Allama Muhammad Iqbal which were composed Tariq Farani,
while GCU Debating Society orators presented an oratorical
rendition of Iqbal’s verses.
Addressing the seminar, Ahsan Iqbal pointed that Allama
Muhammad Iqbal made four invaluable contributions for the
Pakistan movement. He emancipated the South Asian Muslims
from the slavish mentality and revived their faith in their
collective strength. Secondly, he advised them to take up
untiring struggle in every walk of life and preserve their
self-esteem at all costs. Thirdly, he asserted that a
separate homeland for the Muslims of South Asia was
indispensable. Last but not the least, Allama Iqbal
persuaded the Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah to lead the
movement for the independence of South Asian Muslims at a
time when Quaid-i-Azam had settled down in Britain due to
disillusionment, Ahsan Iqbal said.
Speaking
on the occasion, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Meritorious) Dr.
Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that Iqbal’s concept of
Khudi guides us to regain our lost glory. “His philosophy
tells how to set right the affairs of politics, economy and
education in line with the injunctions of Islam,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor asserted that it was knowledge and
creativity rather than wealth and weapons that afforded
superiority to any nation in the current age. Therefore, we
must strive for academic excellence in the light of Iqbal’s
vision.

Vice
Chancellor Prof. (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad
Khaleeq-ur-Rahman
gives
away shield to Ahsan Iqbal Member National Assembly PML-N.
Prof. Dr.
Saadat Saeed said that the eradication of economic
exploitation was the corner stone of Iqbal’s political
thought. He had predicted the fall of capitalism and
communism since both these regimes are contravenes to the
principles of natural justice. Prof. Dr. Khursheed Rizvi;
Distinguished Professor GCU, opined that Iqbal was to the
Muslims what Sheakhsphere was to the English. “No other
thinker or poet in the Muslim tradition has ever come close
the pedestal where destiny has placed Iqbal,” he added. GCU
Urdu Department Chairperson Dr. Shafiq Aajmi also addressed
the seminar.
Later,
the Vice Chancellor gave away shields to the guest speakers.

GcU ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT
recommends bio-control of dengue
The
Government College University Lahore Zoology Department has
recommended biological control of dengue, saying that
fumigation and sprays can be used as emergency measures but
they are not the permanent solutions. “Mosquitoes after
sometime develop resistance against the chemicals used in
fumigation and sprays,” said Zoology Department Chairperson
Prof. Dr. Nusrat Jahan while addressing the university’s
faculty members on “prevention and control of dengue fever”.
GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khaleeq-ur-Rahman was also
present on the occasion.
Prof. Dr.
Nusrat Jahan said that biological control or "biocontrol" is
the use of natural enemies to manage mosquito populations
with a minimum risk to humans, wildlife and the environment.
“The use of biological agents includes predatory insects and
other invertebrates, such as copepods, parasitic nematodes,
larvivorous fish, and microbial entomopathogens including
Bacillus thuringiensis. The different formulations of these
biological insecticides are commercially available and due
to their environmental safety and specificity to nematoceran
Diptera (including mosquitoes) have become mosquito control
agents of choice almost throughout the world,” Prof. Dr.
Nusrat Jahan added. She further said that after the first
outbreak, a research was started in GCU using many
biological control agents and results were evaluated on the
base of lethal concentrations, percentage larval mortalities
and pupae/adult emergence both in laboratory and field
bioassays. At present the Department are in the process of
detecting dengue viruses in vector mosquitoes which will act
as early warning tool for the control of dengue in Pakistan.
She laid a particular stress on the need to support the
research in the area of Medical entomology for developing
population management strategies of dengue vectors in
Pakistan.
Prof.
Nusrat Jahan also highlighted the use of “lethal ovitraps”
in houses and other places to control mosquitoes’
population. “These ovitrap can be made through a black
plastic container filled with water containing a thin paddle
of wood. The ovitrap could be made lethal for mosquitoes by
using chemical/biological insecticides,” she added. Dr.
Nusrat said the use of small crustaceans known as copepods;
two species identified recently in Vector Biology laboratory
as “Mesocyclops” when mixed with Bti were found highly
successful (100%) to control Ist instars Aedes larvae in
large ornamental pounds or in other containers with large
volume of water. She said in Pakistan first outbreak of
Dengue Fever was reported from Karachi in 1994. She called
on students and teachers to develop a habit of emptying and
cleaning water storage containers, gutters, flower vases and
desert coolers, proper disposal of discarded containers and
tyres; removal of ornamental or wild plants that collect
water in the leaf axils.
Speaking
on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor GC University Lahore
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that the
university will support the research being conducted by the
Zoology Department on biological control of dengue fever. He
said that the GC University Lahore is using the best
available chemicals for fumigation. He announced that the
university is also holding fumigation in surrounding areas
besides distributing posters especially prepared by the
university to raise awareness among people about the dengue
fever and its prevention. He said that it is our collective
duty to fight against dengue.

Prof. Dr. Nosheen
donated Rs 3 million to perpetuate the memory of her late mother Prof.
Amtul Hayee and her late sister Arifa Khan. She has desired to use the
profit generated through this amount to purchase the latest books of
History, Political Science, Psychology and literature in English.
Speaking at the
occasion, Abdul Waheed Chief Librarian GCU opined that the book reading
was pivotal in the preservation and promotion of human civilization. He
shed light on the utility of donations in cash and in the form of
personal library collections to the public sector libraries. The GC
University Lahore Library has received the highest number of personal
collections and cash donations in Pakistan which exceeds 60. He
specified that contrary to general practice, the donors did not charge a
single penny from GCU since they had faith in the university system of
preservation of books for the sake of posterity.
GCU Vice Chancellor
Prof. Dr. Ikram-ul-Haq (SI) stressed on the expansion of library
services on digital as well as conventional parameters owing to their
significance viz-a-viz scientific research. He termed Prof. Noshee
Khan’s donation to be the trail blazer for the academia as well as the
financially sound segments of the society.
Addressing the
ceremony, Mr. Majid Nizami showered accolades on Prof. Nosheen Khan for
her generous donation and her philanthropic zest.
He said that Muslim rulers had established
numerous libraries for the Muslims and promoting education as well but
the Americans and Europeans were the beneficiaries of such libraries and
the secret behind their progress is that they read, learnt and followed
the principles and teachings of Muslim writers and ruled the world. He
further said that in present era, the number of books was increasing
rapidly but unfortunately trend of book reading was declining
day-by-day. Reminiscing his time spent at the Government College
as a student back in 1950, he paid homage to his outstanding professors
particularly Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum. He said he used to pen down
articles while sitting in the lash green Oval Ground of GCU. He urged
the youth to inculcate among them the love for book-reading.
He also shared his
memories of moments of Pakistan with audience, he said “Late Liaquat Ali
Khan awarded me sword with a certificate of ‘Mujahid-e-Pakistan’ so I am
a certified Mujahid and fighting through speech and writings in my
newspaper, and Nawa-i-Waqt/The Nation raise voice against every
dictator”, he said adding that from Ayub Khan to Pervaiz Musharaf, he
always questioned all of them in their briefings that ‘Saadi jann kadon
chaddo ge’ (when will they go?). He said that the real task of the army
was to secure our national frontiers, while the nation was ready to
render any sacrifice for the soldiers standing at guard on the national
borders to counter any threat from our traditional enemy, India.
Later, Mr. Majid Nizami
unveiled the commemorative plaque at the Amt-ul-Arifa Reading Room.

Chief Minister Punjab presides over a debate on Economic Sovereignty and
Self-reliance At GCU
The students of the
GC University Lahore passed a resolution after a heated debate that
Pakistan ought to break the begging bowl and embark on the journey of
self-reliance culminating in economic sovereignty. It transpired at the
historic seminar where Punjab Chief Minister Mian Muhammad Shahbaz
Sharif presided over the debate on “Economic Sovereignty and
Self-reliance” and candidly responded to a volley of fire-brand
questions put to him by the young Ravians. The GCU students argued about
the dire need and viability of self-reliance in connection with
Pakistan’s current economic landscape at the backdrop of national
security situation and multi-faceted challenges. A large number of
members of the Punjab cabinet and Punjab Assembly were also present on
the occasion.
Speaking on the
occasion, GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ikram-ul-Haq (SI) recalled that
all the great socio-political movements were initiated or spearheaded by
Ravians. “Likewise, the movement for economic self-reliance has been
ignited by an old Ravain from the GCU podium,” he added.

Opening the debate,
Zeenia Mansoor, a student BSc (Honors) in Biotechnology, drew the
audience’s attention to the vast economic potential of Pakistan in
minerals, agriculture, livestock, dairy and above all human resource.
Looking at the negative side of the motion, Kamran Hussain Hashmi, a
student of intermediate, opined that sovereignty – economic and
political – could only be safeguarded through across the board
accountability so that foreign loans could be rightly utilized for
national uplift and paid back within the stipulated time. The center
point of his debate was that a knife is not harmful per say. Rather, it
was the peculiar use that labeled it as good or bad. The most vociferous
defense of economic self-reliance came from Saadul Hassan, a student of
BA (Hons) in English literature. He came down heavily on the political
elite who put the nation’s destiny in jeopardy in return for their
vested interests. He chided the decision makers who held reins of this
country for the last 63 years for having proved to be a modern-day
Faustus who sell their souls to the Devil for the sake of power and
vanity. He deplored the fate of every new-born Pakistani baby who
inherits a debt of Rs 30,000 at the time of his/her birth – a gift from
the ruling junta! Concluding the debate Noorus Saba, a student of BSc (Hons)
in Chemistry, stressed the dire need to strengthen the mechanism of
accountability, so that the looters and plunderers could be brought to
the book. She believed that there was no harm if the countries helped
each other. All that was needed was the right utilization of foreign
debt.
The speakers
interspersed their discourse with emotionally charged verses by Mirza
Ghalib, Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Habib Jalib. Nazir Ahmed Music Society
played Kalam-e-Iqbal and inspirational national songs at the occasion.
