About the Chair

The GC University Lahore setup Dr. Mehboob-u-l-Haq
economics to recognized his services to Pakistan, its people and above
all to the discipline of Economics.
Dr. Mehboob-ul-Haq an Old Ravian and world renowned
economist had a long and distinguished career as a policy maker while
serving as a Chief Economics of Pakistan Planning Commission, the
Finance Minister in the Federal Cabinet, the Director of the World
Bank’s Policy Planning Department and the United Nations Development
Programme. Described as “the most articulate and persuasive spokesman
for the developing world”, Dr. Mehboob-ul-Haq pioneered many economic
policies to help the poor. As special advisor to the United Nations
Development Program, he developed the Human Development Index, which
measures progress by people’ well-being, rather than by their income
along. Haq was the author of six books on poverty and development. He
died in 1998 in New York.
Dr. Pervez Tahir
occupies the Chair. He is an old Ravian and held the post of Chief
Economist of the Planning Commission of Pakistan.
