HEC DECLARES RESEARCH OUTPUT BY UNIVERSITIES: GCU
Ranked top university of Lahore
The Higher
Education Commission of Pakistan has ranked the GC University Lahore as
the best university in Lahore for producing 282 research papers in 2009
besides placing it on the 5th position in the ranking among all public
and private sector universities of the country. In the eighth year of
its inception,
GCU has outshined some of the finest and oldest
universities of Lahore in the public and private sectors; such as the
University of Punjab which was placed one step beneath GCU with 269
publications, while the University of Veterinary and Health Sciences,
Lahore (UVAS) was ranked 12th with 101 research publications, whereas,
the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore (UET) finished at
20th position for having generated 52 publications. The Lahore
University of Management Sciences (LUMS) came up with barely 42
publications to achieve the 22nd place. Lahore College for Women
University, King Edward Medical University and the University of Health
Sciences secured 30th, 36th and 42nd position in the ranking. Please
The Higher Education Commission has ranked all public and
private universities on the basis of research publications which
appeared in peer-reviewed journals indexed by
Thomas-Reuters, lSI Web of Knowledge during 2009. The database
of ISI Web of Knowledge used for this analysis are Science Citation
Index (SCI-Expanded), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts &
Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI).
Expressing
contentment at this achievement, GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Khalid
Aftab said that the future of our country lies in the hands of bright
and productive scientists and research scholars. He recalled that the
HEC had placed GCU at the 6th position among all private and public
sector universities in 2009 with 154 research publications. In spite of
severe financial and infrastructural constraints traditionally
confronted by a newly established university, GCU has consistently moved
up on the progress index. However, the vice chancellor said that the
progress should not be measured in terms of statistical figures alone.
It should rather be assessed with the view of qualitative analysis. It
is significant to realize the socio-economic utility of the research
being churned out by the Pakistani academia, Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab
concluded. The Vice Chancellor also congratulated the researchers,
teachers and staff members on the achievement.

GCU Lahore contributes first ever
book from Pakistan to WDL
The GC University
Lahore contributed the first ever digital book from Pakistan to the
World Digital Library, a cooperative project of the Library of Congress
and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO). The University shared with the world an historical book titled
“The History of the Afghans” published in English in 1829. GCU Chief
Librarian Abdul Waheed said that the Government College University
Lahore Library was the only library in the world which houses the
181-year-old book and the same can be confirmed from the electronic
catalogue of the World Digital Library.
The book is the first
history of the Afghan people translated from a non-Western language to
appear in a European language. The original work was composed in Persian
in 1609-11 by Neamet Ullah in the court of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.
Neamet Ullah based his work on material compiled by Hybet Khan, an
attendant of the Afghan General Khan Jahan Lodi. The translation is by
the German philologist Bernhard Dorn (1805-81). The book covers the
history of Yacoob Israel, to whom the work attributes the origin of the
Afghans; the life of Yacoob’s grandson, King Talut (Saul), and the
migration of his descendants to Ghor (in present-day Afghanistan); and
the spread of Islam and the influence of Khaled ben Valeed, a celebrated
army officer who converted to Islam and spread it in central and south
Asia.

Please
The work then
chronicles the reigns of rulers of two dynasties that gave way to the
rise of the Mughal Empire, namely the sultans Behlol, Sekander, and
Ibrahim of the Lodi family, and Sher Shah of the Suri family. The last
section recounts the lives of Afghan dervishes-turned-saints, and the
book concludes with accounts of the genealogy of the Afghan tribes that
descend from Sarbanni, Batni, and Ghurghust, the three sons of the
forefather Abd Ulrashid (also known as Pathan, a variation of the term “pashtun”),
a descendent of King Talut. It is pertinent to mention here that the
WDL is an
online library which is in multilingual format and has significant
primary materials from countries and cultures around the world including
manuscripts, maps, rare books, musical scores, recordings, films,
photographs, architectural drawings and other significant materials.
Abdul Waheed said
that GCU now stands with seven institutes like Library of Congress, Yale
University Library and Brown University Library which have shared
material on Central and South Asia through the platform of World Digital
Library. “Only 37 libraries of World have yet succeeded to add its
digital book on World Digital Library electronic catalogue as its
criteria is very tough,” the chief librarian added. Abdul Waheed said
that not only the GCU students but others are also being benefited from
the rich resources of WDL. He said that the University would also upload
more books on literature and history of the subcontinent on WDL in the
near future. He said that 5,000 original digitized letters of literary
figures in the stock which can also be shared with the WDL.
GCU Vice Chancellor
Prof. Dr. Khalid Aftab has expressed pleasure on this achievement
executed of GCU Library.

WAVES OF REVENGE IN POLLUTED
RAVI
The GC University Sustainable Development Study Centre
organized the World Earth Day. Secretary Environment Punjab
Sajjad Saleem Hotinana, WASA Managing Director Dr Javid
Iqbal, GCU Dean of Sciences Dr Ikramul Haq and a large
number of young researchers attended the seminar were the
speakers on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, noted environmentalist and
Director SDSC Dr Aminul Haq said pollution ultimately comes
back to those who initiate it, and the River Ravi is
returning it to the citizens of Lahore in form of fatal
diseases. “We have only two options; either we should set up
hundreds of hospitals around the River Ravi or take steps to
end pollution from the site,” he said. Dr Amin believed that
the environment laws are there and the most effective way of
controlling pollution is strict implementation of these
laws. “All plans will ultimately fail, if these laws are not
implemented,” he said.
The river Ravi has been shrunk just to a polluted river-bed
and archaeological site where the river used to exists and
seeing the pathetic condition, the Punjab environmental
department has planned the conservation and restoration of
the river. These views was expressed by Sajjad Saleem
Hotiana ,Secretary Punjab Environmental department at a
seminar. He further said that universities should also come
forward and give recommendations to the committee that which
kind of technique and technology should be used to restore
the glory of Ravi.
The GCU SDSC researchers proposed the government to install
a special treatment plant on the river-beds which is
designed by them to remove sewage from the river. “The total
cost of the plant is just Rs 61 million. However, there is
no need to buy any land as it will be installed on the
river-beds,” they said.
GCU SDSC student Junaid Noor said that the project can be
done even without government support if each low income
household person of Lahore gives away Rs 5 and each high
income household person donates Rs 50 for the installation
of treatment plant. According to Junaid’s research,
77percent citizens are ready to pay for the project if an
independent reliable private institution undertakes it. He
said people lack trust on government. Meanwhile, some NGOs
representatives suggested joining Ravi with other canals and
rivers of Punjab to restore its glory.
Later, GCU student Saba Dar presenting a research paper on
River Ravi said that most radical consequences of ecological
disturbance in the river are vegetative spoilage and
water-borne diseases. She said that long term application of
sewage water on agriculture fields cause accumulation of
toxic metals in soil which subsequently transfer to food
chain.
GCU student Saad Farooq condemned the government support
for illegal dumping of sacrificial waste on river-beds. Madiha Farooq, an MPhil Environmental
Sciences student, said that leukemia virus has been found in
the milk of cows and buffaloes which are located in the
surroundings of the River Ravi.
Muhammad Ghous, an SDSC researcher, said that dumping of
toxic materials in the river Ravi is also contaminating the
underground water. “Malaria, Hepatitis C, allergies, Asthma,
and intestinal infection are highly common in the slum
community living on the bank of the river,” he said. GCU
student Noreen Habib laid stress on building pressure on the
government for restoring the glory of the site. She said
that 42 types of fishes have been extinct form river which
has caused a huge economic loss to the country.
Concluding the seminar, MD WASA Dr Javid Iqbal brought the
attention of the students about the scarcity of pure water in the City. He said that the
underground water level is decreasing by 3 feet in Lahore
every year and if proper steps have not been taken, our
future generations would face disastrous consequences. He
said that a bill is being drafted to empower the WASA to
stop the wastage of water.

Pakistan
Military Academy Kakul
representatives
Presentation on Army recruitment procedure for GCU Students
The Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Kakul representatives gave a
detailed multimedia presentation to the GC University students at the
Bokhari Auditorium about the Army recruitment procedures, objectives,
training, and the life and rigorous routine of the academy cadets. The
presentation was aimed at motivating and guiding the brilliant students
of the university to join the Pakistan Army and serve the nation in
peace and war with pride. A senior cadet of the academy told students
that the main objectives of PMA schooling are character building,
military training, leadership training, physical development and
intellectual enrichment of the cadets. He also briefed students about
the organisation, mission and courses offered by the academy. The
pictures of cadets’ hard physical and combat training were also shown to
the students to help them understand a cadet’s life.
Major Farhan answered the students’ questions in detail about the
structure of Pakistan Army, recruitment procedure and medical fitness.
He dispelled the impression that students with weak eyesight and slight
colour blindness cannot join the military, saying there is a specific
criterion. He, however, said that perfect eyesight is mandatory for
joining the various sections of Air Force and Navy. He also told the
students about the Army recruitment procedure through the Inter Services
Selection Board commonly known as ISSB. In reply to questions about the
basic criteria for selection and rejection by the Inter Services
Selection Board, he laid a stress on medical fitness, leadership
qualities and I.Q test. In reply to a criticism on strict medical
fitness requirements of the Army, Major Farhan said “it’s for your own
benefit. If you come to PMA with medical problems, the academy’s
rigorous routine and hard physical development exercises can prove
dangerous for you.”
Later, Major Farhan presented an Army Shield to the GCU Registrar
Sahibzada Faisal Khursheed. The GCU Registrar also presented university
souvenir to Major Farhan. The GCU students termed the presentation
highly informative and also showed their enthusiasm to join the Pakistan
Army to serve the country as no one else can.
