Governor distributes Baitul Maal
scholarships among 200 GCU’s students
Governor Lt General (R) Khalid Maqbool on Saturday distributed
Baitul Maal scholarships among 1,700 students of various
universities on the Punjab University’s (PU) New Campus. He said
universities should create active links with the industry. He said
the government had granted Rs 7 billion to the PU, Rs 6 billion to
the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Rs 3 billion to
the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), and Rs 2
billion to the Government College University (GCU). Scholarships
amounting to Rs 29,739,441 were distributed among 1,700 students.
Out of these students, 837 were PU students, 200 UET students,
200 GCU students, 208 University of Education students, 100 UVAS
students, and 155 were Lahore College for Women University students.

Education Commission (HEC) has initiated need based scholarship
program for needy students who are studying in first professional
year, have secured admission or expected to get admission in
specific disciplines of medical and life sciences offered by
participating universities enlisted below and it is difficult for
them to pursue their education because of financial constraints. GC
University Lahore students are also eligible for these scholarships.

4. The Swedish
Institute, a public agency for cultural and educational exchange
with individuals and institutions abroad, hereby announces a number
of GUEST SCHOLARSHIPS for the academic year 2006-2007 (September
2006-May 2007). the scholarships are applied for in global
competition and are open to foreign students/researchers who wish to
come to Sweden as guest students and who do not intend to settle
permanently in Sweden. Interested faculty members of the GCU may
apply under the intimation to Registrar Office GCU Lahore. For

GENERAL CRITERIA
Citizenship
In principle, the Guest Scholarships
are open for students from any part of the world except from the
Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden).
However, the Swedish Institute also administers a regional
scholarship programme, the Visby Programme (Belarus, Estonia,
Latvia, Lithuania Poland, Northwest Russia including Moscow and
Ukraine). Applicants from these regions should submit the
application within this programme only.
There are no national quotas. The
Swedish Institute will distribute the scholarships as evenly as
possible among applicants from different geographical areas.
Age
There is no age limit.
Study level
The scholarships are intended for
students at advanced university level, for part of Ph.D. or post-doc
studies at any university or university college in Sweden or for
participation in a Master's Level Programme. There are no
scholarships available for undergraduate studies. The scholarships
cannot be granted for a complete course of study leading to a Ph.D.
degree.
Study period
The maximum scholarship period is
three academic years but the scholarships are usually granted for
one academic year (nine months) at a time. They can also be awarded
for study periods of shorter duration. The scholarships are intended
to finance a temporary stay in Sweden.
Fields of study
Scholarships are granted for studies
within all subjects. There are no scholarships available for
learning basic Swedish.
Languages
Good knowledge of English and/or
Swedish is required.
Foreign students in Sweden
Students already studying in Sweden
are eligible to apply provided that they are not permanent
residents, nor holders of a Swedish work permit, and they may not
have been living in Sweden for more than two years when the
scholarship is due to begin. (*Not applicable for EU citizens.)
Scholarship conditions
At present, the scholarships amount to
SEK 8,000 per month for graduate and research students and SEK
12,000 for holders of a Ph.D. degree. Each scholarship is designed
to cover the living expenses of ONE person only. There are no grants
of any kind for family members. Scholarship holders from developing
countries can apply for partial travel grant. The scholarship holder
is insured by the Swedish Institute against illness and accident
during the scholarship period.
HOW TO APPLY

Ph.d. Studies and Post-doc Studies
Letter of invitation
Prior to application, the applicant
must establish contact with a Swedish university department willing
to accept the applicant for the proposed studies. This contact can
also be made through the professor or academic adviser at the
applicant's home institution.
In order to enable the Swedish host
institution to consider issuing a letter of invitation, the
applicant must, as a minimum requirement, clearly indicate their
study or research area and include a, C.V. or resume of their
previous study or research.
Request for application forms
The Swedish Institute application form
must be used. Application fotms will be available on the website
www.studyinsweden.se between 1 September 2005 ---15 January
2006.
Requests for application forms can
also be made from 1 September by contacting the Swedish Institute
either by regular mail, fax or e-mail.
Submission of the application form
The application form should be
submitted to the address below. It must reach the Swedish Institute
by regular mail not later than 15 January 2006. Applications
arriving after that dare will not be considered.
The form must be completed in its
entirety, and all documents mentioned on the application form must
be enclosed when submitted. Incomplete applications will be
rejected. No enclosures will be returned.
The outcome of the applications will
be announced to candidates in May/June 2006. Individual questions
concerning the application procedure will not be answered.
Master's Level Programmes
Applications for a Master's Level
Programme (listed in the Swedish Institute brochure Master's Level Programmes Taught in English and also available on
www.studyinsweden.se) should he sent directly to the
university/university college in question.
Applicants for a Master's Level
Programme should clearly indicate to their application to the
Master's Level Programme whether they wish to be considered for a
scholarship.
The university/university college will
recommend a limited nurnherof candidates for a Swedish Institute
scholarship. The Swedish Institute will then make the final
selection of candidates for a scholarship. In the scholarship
selection process, we give priority to students who are not already
pursuing a Master's Level Programme in Sweden.
Please observe that applicants to a
Master's Level Programme should not apply for a scholarship directly
to the Swedish Institute. Applications sent to the Swedish Institute
will not be considered.
All questions concerning the
application procedure for the Mater's Level Programme should be
directed to the university/university college concerned.
The outcome of the applications will
be announced to candidates in May/June 2006. Individual questions
concerning the application procedure will not be answered.

Kangaroo Mathematics Contest

International Kangaroo Mathematics
Contest (also known as Mathematics without Borders) is an
international event guided by the international Association
"Mathematiques Pour Tous" (Mathematics for all). Association was
created in 1990 and now unites more than 30 countries from
all over the world. Pakistan was admitted as the member of the
Association in October 2004. The responsibility for
conducting this international mathematics Contest in Pakistan is
taken by the School of Mathematical Sciences, GC University
Lahore.
The Association tries to promote
exchanges between the students and teachers all over the world.
Every year national and international summer-camps are organized for
the winners.
Since the Contest takes place at each
participating school, therefore there is no hassle of transporting
the students. This is the largest International Mathematics Contest
and provides an international recognition to the participating
students at a very early stage in their lives. In the same time, it
connects the students with the rest of the world community. Students
from Grade 3 - Grade 12 are eligible to participate in the Contest.
This program is recognized to be most
effective in promoting and popularizing mathematics among the school
and colleges, thus giving a world-class recognition to participating
students and their institutions.
TEST DETAILS:
The aim of the Kangaroo Contest is to
promote the spreading of a basic mathematical culture by organizing
an annual Contest. This Contest is held on the same day through out
the world. The Contest is composed of just one test, no preliminary,
no selection, no final test. The format of the test is 20-30 simple
and attractive questions of increasing difficulty. Each question is
followed by several choices of answers and only one choice is the
correct one.

1. NBP Student Loan Scheme
TOP
Pursuant
to the announcement made by the Federal Finance Minister in his
2001-2002 budget speech, a STUDENTS LOAN SCHEME (SLS) for
Education was launched by the Government of Pakistan in
collaboration with major commercial banks of Pakistan (NBP, HBL,
UBL, MCB and ABL). Under the Scheme, financial assistance is
provided by way of Interest Free Loans to the meritorious
students who have financial constraints for pursuing their
studies in Scientific, Technical and Professional education
within Pakistan.
The Scheme
is being administered by a high powered committee comprising
Deputy Governor, State Bank of Pakistan, Presidents of the
commercial banks and Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Finance,
Government of Pakistan.
ELIGIBILITY
Under
the scheme the students are eligible to apply for loans
provided:
