Introduction
TOP
The Centre for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) began as the “High
Tension Laboratory” in 1954. It was established by Dr. Rafi Muhammad
Chaudhry (Sitara-e-Khidmat, Sitara-e-Imtiaz and Hilal-e-Imtiaz)
for carrying out research in Atomic and Nuclear Physics. This
laboratory included, among other facilities, a 1.2 million Volts
Cockcroft-Walton particle accelerator for conducting experiments in
Atomic and Nuclear Physics. Intensive research was carried out in
this laboratory by Dr. R. M. Chaudhry, his students and colleagues.
In 1967, the first PhD Degree was awarded to Mr. Mustafa Yar Khan
from the institution.
In view of the effectiveness and solution-oriented thrust in the
modern approach to research, the scope of this research
establishment was broadened and made multidimensional in 1986. Dr.
Muhammad Zakria Butt (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz) was instrumental in
the establishment of the Metal Research Laboratories, equipped with
a microprocessor controlled Universal Materials Testing Machine (100
KN capacity), specimen embedding press, grinding and polishing
machines, optical metallurgical microscopes, etc. to study
mechanical properties of crystals and their relationship with
microstructure. The Laser Physics Laboratory was also set up to
fabricate different types of lasers, their operation and
applications in Laser Spectroscopy and Holography.
In
1991, the amalgam of all these laboratories was renamed the Centre
for Advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) by the Board of Governors of
Government College Lahore. A new building was constructed at a cost
of Rs. 3.8 million. The new edifice comprised two classrooms, four
research laboratory rooms, a computer lab, and a conference hall
with an attached lobby and offices. In 2004, the collaboration
between CASP and PINSTECH resulted in the establishment of a new
Particle Accelerator Laboratory where a locally fabricated 100 kilo
electron Volt linear accelerator was installed for training and
research in Nanotechnology.
Major advancements were made in research facilities and
infrastructure in 2002 and 2007. Degree- awarding academic
Programmes, at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, were
launched in electronics and telecommunications. During this period
the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) provided a number
of grants totalling to Rs. 190 million for establishing new research
facilities and for revamping existing ones. A new multistory
building was constructed to house the new laboratories
The introduction of the Centre is incomplete without mention of Dr.
Samar Mubarakmand, Old Ravian and former Director CASP from 1974 to
1977, who has become an icon of Nuclear Physics in Pakistan. The
Government of Pakistan has bestowed the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, the
Hilal-e-Imtiaz and the Nishan-e-Imtiaz upon him for
his meritorious services to the country. Dr. Mubrakmand served as
the Chairman of the National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM)
from 2001 to 2007 and is now working as Special Assistant to the
Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Research Groups
Academic Programmes
BSc Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications
The
4-Year BSc Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications Degree
Programme has been initiated by CASP to meet the demand for
qualified and skilled personnel in Electronics and
Telecommunications. Both these areas are vital for the normal

of GC University Lahore, this Degree Programme is run by highly
qualified and competent faculty and staff members. This Programme
is primarily intended for students who have just completed their
Intermediate education and are aspiring to gain professional
competence and qualification in the areas of Electronics and
Telecommunications.
The main goals and features of this Degree Programme are:
-
To develop in-depth understanding of both theory and practice.
-
To develop the ability to reason with the knowledge gained and
to apply it for solving new problems in industry and research.
-
To make students aware of the social, technical and economic
issues as they relate to Electronics and Telecommunications.
-
To provide exposure to leading-edge technologies as they
develop.
-
To cater to both national and international standards and codes
of practice.
Award
of Degree
The candidate must earn at least 148 credit hours by passing the
Courses in approved curriculum to qualify for the award of the BSc
Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications Degree.
MSc Telecommunications Degree Programme (Evening)
The technology of Telecommunications allows people to share information
over long distances. Due to advancements in this technology, the world
has shrunk to the level of a global village. The personal and
organisational information takes a wide variety of forms like voice,
text, multimedia and the like. All this information needs to be
converted to signals that can be transmitted over long distances either
using some medium like copper wires or optical fibre, or without medium
by radiation (which may involve satellites). This has enabled
applications like electronic commerce, electronic shopping, electronic
banking, electronic government, to name a few. To design and operate
Telecommunications networks requires extensive training both in theory
and in practice. The 2-Year MSc Telecommunications Degree Programme has
been tailored to this end and it caters to the needs of those fresh
science and engineering graduates who plan to make their career in the
Telecommunications’ industry. It is particularly suitable for graduates
who are already working in the Telecommunications’ industry and want to
upgrade their qualification, knowledge and skills.
Award of
Degree
The
candidate must earn at least 75 credit hours by passing the Courses in
approved curriculum set for this Degree to qualify for the award of the
MSc in Telecommunications Degree.
Future Prospects
CASP
has produced scientists of calibre who have made their mark in
prestigious research organisations like the Pakistan Atomic Energy
Commission (PAEC), A.Q. Khan Research Laboratories, the National
Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM), the Karachi Nuclear
Power Plant (KANUPP) and the National Institute of Silicon Technology (NIST).
CASP alumni have held positions of responsibility at business
organisations like Siemens, Nokia, Ericsson, Wateen Telecom, Warid
Telecom, Mobilink, Telenor, WorldCall, and many more.
