GCU becomes pioneer of Nano-chemistry in Punjab

GC University Lahore has become pioneer of Nano-chemistry in Punjab with the establishment of high-tech Nano-chemistry Laboratory (NCL) and United States-registered patents in the field, said Prof. (Meritorious) Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman Vice Chancellor GCU Lahore and NCL Director Dr. Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh during an e-meeting with eminent scientists of the country to have their input to develop a strong scientific base at GCU for research and development in the field of Nano-science and Nanotechnology. Prof. Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that GCU was going to hold a workshop on Nano-science and Nano-technology in July this year to review the developments of nanotechnology in Pakistan, what had been done in research and development and what was the possibility of applications in Industry and what should be the strategy from now for drawing the maximum benefits from this globally influencing technology for all nations of the world.

In his message, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Scientist (Emeritus) Prof Dr N.M Butt said that Nano-technology had remained an ignored area of research in the country despite the fact that it had an ample scope of applications to our industries in Sialkot and Faisalabad apart from other types of industries like paints, civil industry, auto and chemicals. He said that in Karachi they had a Nano-chemistry laboratory and probably no other university had concentrated on it as yet.

Eminent Physicist and Professor Rafi Chair Dr Muhammad Zakria Butt highlighted the need to involve the Pakistan’s industry in this suitable technology for delivering the socio-economic benefits to our nation. He said that GCU had attached its Nano-chemistry Laboratory with Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization for speedy dispensation of funds and strict monitoring of the research development.

GC UNIVERSITY LAHORE GETS THE FOURTH US PATENT

 

GC University Lahore made an unprecedented achievement by getting another key invention, “ZNO-SIO2 nono-powder for the development of latent fingerprints”, patented with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. “It’s the fourth US patent of GCU which is hopefully going to be landmark development for crime scene investigation,” said Prof. (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman Vice Chancellor GC University Lahore while talking to media regarding the approval of the university’s fourth patent application. The patent in the field of forensics and nano-technology is the result of research done by Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) Director General Dr Mohammad Ashraf Tahir, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman GCU VC and GCU Nano-chemistry Laboratory Director Dr. Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh for developing indigenous strong and low-cost nano-powder for lifting latent fingerprints from nonporous surfaces such as metal, glass or plastic. This nano-powder composition contains 40-50 percent zinc and 10-20percent silicon and it is patented as it lifts even minor fingerprints without contaminating them. This nano-powder gives very clear images of fingerprints by adhering to the moisture and oily constituents of sweat residue through pressure deficit mechanism. 

 

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that the ZNO-SIO2 nono-powder was tested at the Punjab Forensic Science Agency and was a result strong collaboration between the two institutions. Talking further about collaboration with PFSA, Prof Rahman said that modern research had grown complex and multidisciplinary and it was not possible for a single research institution or university to possess all the knowledge, equipment, and techniques required. Therefore, he added, it was imperative to establish academic and research links and share resources, expertise and equipment with each other. He expressed gratitude to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency DG for his technical support for research at GCU in the area of forensics. He shared that GCU had also established modern nano-chemistry laboratory to advance research in the fields of solar cells, nanocatalysis, nanofiltration, nanoforensics, nanodrugs, nanofertilizers and wastewater treatment. He said that GCU was expecting to have more patents in the above fields in the coming years.

 

It is pertinent to mention here that the United States Patent Office had already patented the GCU’s invented ‘analytical grade salt’, ‘nano-leucite for slow release nitrogen fertiliser and green environment’ and ‘zinc oxide nanoflakes for treatment of pollutants’.  GCU Dean Prof Dr Islam Ullah Khan and faculty members said that the bases of research had become highly strong at GCU in the last four years due to the untiring efforts of Prof. Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman Vice Chancellor GC University Lahore.

GCU establishes Nano-chemistry laboratory

 

GC University, Lahore following its patent on Nano-fertilizer, has established a new latest Nano-chemistry laboratory on the campus to advance research in the fields of Solar Cells, Nano-catalysis, Nano-filtration, Nano-forensics, Nano-drugs, Nano-fertilizers and Waste water treatment. Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman Vice Chancellor GCU has given the charge of Director, Nano-chemistry Laboratory to Prof Dr Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh eminent chemist.

 

Prof Rahman proudly said that the university had won Rs 10 million high tech equipment for the new laboratory under the three highly crucial international projects on nano-technology by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Science Foundation and TWAS; the world academy of sciences. While, the university has also spent a large amount funds on equipment and establishment of the laboratory. He also announced that the high tech science laboratories were national assets and were opened to all Pakistani students and local industries for research purposes. He said that science equipment were antiques for display, rather they were machines that must be used day and night for the advancement of science and technology in the country.

 

He claimed that all the science equipment in the university was operational and being used day and night by the researchers. He said that the university’s Engineering Cell ensured uninterrupted power supply to all laboratories 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He also revealed that the university had made more than five inventions in the fields of nano-technology in the last three years, out of which two, Nano-fertilizer and zinc-oxide nano-flakes, had been patented by the United States Patent and Trademark office. The university had also published 34 papers in reputed journals on Nano-technology besides four books in the last three years, adding that GCU faculty would continue their hazard work for new inventions in the field of science. To a question, the Vice Chancellor GCU said that they had a plan to initiate new postgraduate programs in nano-chemistry for which this new laboratory was also necessary.

 

Talking to media, Prof Dr Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh said that the Vice Chancellor, who was an international expert of nano-technology and had scores of research papers in international journals on nano-technology to his credit, had shown great trust in him. He said that Prof Rahman had developed a culture of research in GCU and any demand for research equipment had never been refused by him.

GC University Lahore produced three Doctors of Philosophy (PhDs) in the field of Chemistry. The GCU Examination Department issued notifications after approval of theses of Samreen Gul, Misbah Irshad and Hira Khalid. Samreen Gul, Misbah Irshad and Hira Khalid completed their research on the topics of “Synthesis, Spectral Characterization and Biological Evaluation of 1,3,4-Oxadiazole and Morpholine Bearing Heterocycles”, Synthesis and Structure-activity Relationship Studies on Various Sulfa Drugs Bearing 1,4-Benzodioxane Moiety” and “Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Activities of Sulfonamide Derivatives Bearing Piperidine Nucleus”. Hira Khalid and Samreen Gul completed her PhDs under the supervision of Dr. Aziz-ur-Rehman. Dr. Muhammad Athar Abbasi supervised the PhD research of Misbah Irshad.

FORENSIC EXPERTS ATTEND CULTURAL EVENING AT GCU LAHORE

 

A cultural evening was held in the honor of foreign forensic experts participating in the first international conference on “Forensic Science and Justice” being organized at GC University Lahore under the auspices the University’s Chemistry Department, Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) and Higher Education Commission. Prof (Meritorious) Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman Vice Chancellor GC University Lahore and PFSA Director General Dr Muhammad Ashraf Tahir also attended the cultural evening blended with the music and drama performances by the members of the University’s Dramatics Club and Nazir Ahmed Music Society.  

 

Addressing the ceremony, Prof Rahman GCU Vice Chancellor said that such cultural evenings at the sidelines of conferences provided opportunity to their students and faculty members to informally interact and exchange ideas with the top foreign and national scientists, and such interactions led to fruitful long term collaborations which were beneficial for the development of science in Pakistan. He said that such events also played a role in apprising the foreigners about the culture and traditions of Pakistan.

First Int’l conference on forensic science begins at GCU

 

The first international conference in Pakistan on a crucial topic of “Forensic Science and Justice” began at the Government College University, Lahore under the auspices of the university’s Chemistry Department, Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) and Higher Education Commission. Above 500 lawyers, judges, forensic experts, police officers and academicians are participating in the three-day international conference which was spread over six technical sessions on ‘Jurisprudence’, ‘Forensic Toxicology and Drug of Abuse’, ‘Crime Detection and its Investigation’, ‘Forensic Biology’, ‘Forensic Psychology’ and ‘Cyber crimes’. Prof. Dr. Harpal S. Buttar from University of Ottawa, Canada, GCU Chemistry Department Chairperson Dr Ahmed Adnan, Dr. Mona Elghory Head Egypt Forensic Medicine Department were also present in the opening ceremony of the conference.  

 

Addressing the opening ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that it was the first time in Pakistan that a conference was being held on forensic science to discuss latest methods to overcome obstacles affecting judicial system. “About 11 eminent forensic scientists from the US, UK, Canada, Egypt and Australia are practicing in the conference, he added.

 

In his keynote address, Dr Garth Glassberg, the executive director of Chicago Regional Crime Lab, USA, said that forensic science made the dead speak. “Humans can lie, forget or get frightened from the Crime Scene, but physical evidence is always present at crime scene, as a silent witness,” he said, adding that the change from oral testimony to scientific physical evidence testimony was a paradigm shift in the America’s criminal justice system. He also told participants that like human fingerprints, every firearm in the world leave unique print on its ammunition, and how it could be proved in the court that ammunition were fired form the specific firearm.

 

Terrey H Gilbert, an eminent defense attorney from Ohio, USA, said DNA analysis and other forensic evidences were being used to revisit closed cases in USA in which biological crime scene specimens were maintained. “Questionable convictions based on non-scientific evidence such as “eyewitness” identification are now being reversed by new testing using this advanced science. As a result, hundreds of innocent people in the last 20 years have been released,” he said, adding that these DNA exonerations had now called into question widely accepted notions of the reliability of traditional evidence.

PFSA Director General Dr Muhammad Ashraf Tahir said prior to the establishment of PFSA, forensic techniques were applied in less than one percent of the over-all crime investigations in Pakistan. “Above and beyond sanctioning wider discretion to the investigators, this practice also leads to a situation where large number of evidentially fragile cases is submitted to the courts and resultantly the fraction of cases resulting in convictions remains low,” he added. He said PFSA had proved its excellence at the international level, and they were receiving cases from America, UK, Egypt and other countries of the world. He laid stress on establishing more state-of-the-art forensic science agencies in the country to support the judicial system.

 

Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif former chief justice Lahore High Court also spoke on the role of physical evidence in criminal justice system. Dr Muhammad Akhyar Farrukh presented a paper on Green Synthesis of Magnetic Nanpowder for the Development of Latent Finger marks.

 

Speaking on the occasion, GCU Dean Faculty of Science and Technology Prof Islam Ullah Khan said about 70 papers would be presented by the eminent forensic experts at the conference which stressed on refining objectives, deliberating delivery plan details, discussion and dissemination of emerging results from it.

GCU signs accord for undertaking research on medicines

The Department of Chemistry of GC University Lahore signed a key accord for five years with the NovaMed Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Limited for undertaking research on development and improvement in medicines. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof (Meritorious) Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman and NovaMed Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Idrees signed the agreement. GCU Director Research Prof Dr Muhammad Zakria Butt, Dean Prof Dr Islam Ullah Khan and Director Academic Planning External Links Fauzia Shaheen were also present on the occasion. The key features of agreement are collaboration in research projects, provision of reference standards of pharmaceuticals drugs, provision of stipend, training opportunities and jobs to GCU students and special projects for mutual benefit. The NovaMed has also pledged to facilitate GCU in upgrading its Materials Chemistry Lab. Speaking at the accord signing ceremony, Prof Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that modern research was increasingly complex. “No single individual or institution possesses all the knowledge, equipment, and techniques required,” he added.

GCU LAHORE WILL START DIPLOMA COURSE TO TRAIN COPS IN FORENSIC SCIENCES

 

GC University Lahore has decided to launch a diploma course in Forensic Sciences for policemen and officials of other law enforcement agencies in collaboration with the Punjab Forensic Science Agency to train them in crime scene investigation, evidence preservation, crime mapping, fingerprints and DNA markers & technologies and analytical techniques. The decision was made during an accord signing ceremony between PFSA and GCU for academic and research collaboration. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. (Meritorious) Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman and PFSA Director General Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Tahir signed the accord, while GCU Director Research Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zakria Butt, Director Academic Planning Fauzia Shaheen, Chemistry Department Chairperson and PFSA Director Forensics Dr. M. Sarwar were also present on the occasion. The Punjab Forensic Science Agency will extend practical training and other facilities for the six-month diploma that would help policemen use modern methods and technologies in nabbing outlaws and ensure effective collaboration forensic experts and agencies. The PFSA also offered to provide training to the GCU faculty members for teaching and curriculum designing of the diploma for policemen.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Khaleeq said training of professionals involved in law enforcement would help to create an enabling environment for equality, fair play, justice and rule of law. He also announced that GCU is soon launching the B.Sc (Hons) and one-year postgraduate diploma in Forensic Sciences and to produce skilled manpower for law enforcement and forensic science agencies and PFSA would provide excess to their students to high-tech equipment for practical training and identify the new areas of research in the subject of Forensic Chemistry. He said in the four-year B.Sc (Hons) programme, it is more feasible for the University to train a student in wide and diverse spectrum of Forensics. He said that GCU was the first Public Sector University in Pakistan which initiated academic programme in Forensic Chemistry in 2008 and later upgraded it to MS in 2009. He said that the GCU has revised its curriculum of MS forensic chemistry in collaboration with PFSA.

The forensic agency would also facilitate GCU in upgrading and establishing Forensic Science laboratories.

Both the parties also agreed to jointly hold seminars and lectures for judges and officials of law enforcement agencies to raise awareness among them about Forensic Sciences. Later, PFSA officials and Vice Chancellor visited the GCU Chemistry Department and inspected the high-tech facilities including Materials Chemistry Laboratory, Single Crystal X-Ray Diffractometer, HPLC LC-20T Diode Array Detector, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer, CHNS Elemental Analyzer and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.

GCU AWARDS TWO PhDs in PHYSICS and ONE in Chemistry  

 

The GCU Lahore has awarded two PhD degrees in the subject of Physics and one in Chemistry. Sami Ullah completed his research on the topic of “Study in the Extraction, Structure Elucidation of Potential Anti-tumor Agents from Species of Asteraceae and Lauraceae” under the supervision of Dr Durre Shahwar.

 

Gohar Abbas and Tousif Hussain are notified PhDs in Physics after the approval of their thesis on the topic of “Collective Modes in Weakly Magnetized Relativistic and Ultra-relativistic Electron Plasmas” and “Synthesis of Titanium based Nitride Thin Films by Plasma Focus System” completed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. G. Murtaza Salam Professor in Physics GCU and Prof. Dr. Riaz Ahmad Director CASP respectively.

 

GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rehman congratulated the scholars on completion of their PhD programme.
