Government College University, Lahore, announces the establishment of Dr. Nazir Ahmed Institute of Biological Sciences, dedicated to fostering excellence in the fields of Zoology, Botany, and Fisheries. 

Named in the honor of the GC’s principal, Dr. Nazir Ahmed, who served in the 1960s, and the Institute pays tribute to his student-centric approach and unwavering commitment to upholding high standards at GC, during challenging times of the aftermath of the Partition.

The Department of Zoology, renowned as the oldest and most esteemed seat of learning in Pakistan, has set the foundation for the Institute's excellence. Prof Dr Zaidi highlights its significance, stating, "Zoology is a discipline that allows us to unravel the complexities of the animal kingdom. Building upon our legacy, the Institute of Biological Sciences will further strengthen our commitment to zoological research and education."

The Department of Botany, also an integral part of the Institute, plays a crucial role in our understanding of plant life's importance in sustaining ecosystems and supporting life on Earth. Prof Dr Zaidi emphasizes, "The Institute of Biological Sciences will enhance our efforts in botanical research, thanks to the pioneering work of the Department of Botany."

In collaboration with Zoology and Botany, the Institute of Biological Sciences offers an MPhil program in Fisheries to address the growing demand for expertise in fisheries management and conservation. Prof Dr Zaidi explains, "The MPhil Fisheries program equips students with the necessary skills to tackle challenges in the fishing industry and contribute to sustainable aquaculture practices."
