The Botanic Garden has been working on the restoration of indigenous plant species of Punjab for the last two decades. The successful restoration at small scale, has been carried out in tropical thorn forest and scrub forest in Harappa and soan valley, district Khushab.
The students of B.Sc, M.Sc , Ph.D. classes from the departments of Botany, Environmental Science, Chemistry and Zoology perform the field experiments in the Botanic Garden. Further, on request, the students GCU as well as other Universities can also get some plant material needed for their research.
One of the principle roles of the Botanic Garden is education and filed demonstrations. Most of the plants mentioned in the books of Biology for school and intermediate levels and in the books of Botany at postgraduate levels are present in Botanic Garden, which provides the ideal plant material to observe and understand. Every year over 1000 students from various educational institutes both inside and outside the Lahore visit Botanic Garden and they are guided with the information about the plants.
GCU Botanic garden had taken initiative by starting environmental education program for school students in collaboration with SDSC GCU. The school education program was started by Botanic Garden Govt. College University in 2009. The basic purpose of this school education program is to provide “Education for Sustainable Development” to the students of different schools. In this program different educational activities are provided to the students according to their class level. Few glimpse of activities:

The Botanic garden has a seed bank, storing the seeds of native and exotic species. The native species seeds are collected from the wild habitats, while the exotic species seeds are collected from Botanic garden. A greenhouse is also present for research and display of plants.
The Botanic Garden has organized four International conferences since 2006, and two seminars as well as seven meetings of the advisory board for Botanic Garden. The delegates from United States, United Kingdom, India, China, Ukraine, Egypt along the representatives from all parts of Pakistan has participated in the conferences.
